Exact same thing happened to me; 99% of 4 cyl cougars are manual so the bit of info didnt exist on my most commonly used forum.
For the shifter base; some contours had a metal base if you have a nearby junkyard to look around. Not 100% on the fitment with the focus; as long as its a cable shift (some were rod shift) I would think it would work. Probably easier to find then an svt unit.
