Actually an average AC unis can steal 20-30hp when on and as much as 10-15 when off. Also they usually weigh around 100lbs including the compresser, pulley and belt so there is a substantial savings there.
I pulled the AC in my Gen II MR2 and got 28 more hp and it weighed around 80Lbs with all the crap. And that 28 hp was off! I'm supprised I have never seen anything about pulling AC here before. It's a classic low cost mod to get more hp for almost no money.
However make sure to go to an AC service shop so they can capture your freon otherwise you can be fined by the EPA for polution and I think it is upwards of $5,000 if you get caught.
