Focus Engines Specifications
  • 2.0L CVH/SPI – 100hp (82kW) – 125lb-ft (169N-m)
    - Standard in LX and SE model sedans through 2004.

    The 2.0 was introduced in the 1997 Escort. It now used split port induction and produced 110 hp (82 kW) and 125 ft·lbf (170 Nm). The additional displacement was achieved by boring the 1.9 engine to 84.8 mm (3.339 in). It is the most refined CVH engine made, and continued to deliver excellent fuel economy, although due to the cars' increased weight, mileage is somewhat less than earlier models (usually mid-20s city, mid-30s highway). It is also the last CVH engine made and saw an end to production in the last of the 2004 Ford Focus LX/SE sedan and wagons.
  • 2.0L Zetec – 130hp (97kW) – 135lb-ft (183N-m)
    - Standard on ZX3, ZX5, ZTS, and wagon models, and available in SE-model sedans through 2004.

    Ford Motor Company used the Zetec name on a variety of Inline-4 cylinder automobile engines. It was coined to replace "Zeta" on a range of 1.6 L to 2.0 L multi-valve engines introduced in 1991. The company used the name widely in European advertising and later introduced it to the North American market with the Contour.

    The Zetec name was so recognized that Ford decided to apply it to other high-tech four-cylinder engines. It is used across many engine types in Europe today even though the original Zeta design ended production in 2004. Ford also confusingly used the "Zetec" name for a trim level designation in certain markets.

    A Formula One engine produced for Ford by Cosworth was also badged as a Ford Zetec, although this was technologically unrelated. This engine (a 3.5 litre V8) was used by the Benetton team in 1994, and powered Michael Schumacher to his first World Championship title.
  • 2.0L Zetec – 170hp (127kW) – 145lb-ft (197N-m)
    - Standard on the SVT Focus.

    The car featured a thoroughly reworked version of the 2.0 liter Zetec engine available in other Focus models. Developed in concert with Cosworth, this engine featured many advanced technologies. Included were a special aluminum cylinder head with enlarged intake ports, high compression pistons and forged connecting rods, piston oil squirters, solenoid operated variable camshaft timing on the intake cam, dual stage intake manifold, and a 4-2-1 tubular exhaust header.
  • 2.3L Duratec PZEV (Partial Zero Emissions Vehicle) – 145hp (108kW) – 149lb-ft (202N-m)
    - Standard on all cars sold in 2003 and 2004 in California, Massachusetts, New York, Vermont and Maine; optional in other U.S. states.

  • 2.0L Duratec – 136hp (101kW) – 136lb-ft (184N-m)
    - Standard on the (non-ST) 2005+ Focus.

    The Duratec 2.0 '993' is a 2.0 L (122 CID; 1998 cc) version built in Chihuahua, Chihuahua, Mexico. Bore is 87.5 mm (3.44 in) and stroke is 83.1 mm (3.27 in).

    It is used in the US/Argentinian Focus and the Brazilian Ford EcoSport. (European Fiesta ST, Ford Focus and Focus C-Max, Mondeo, S-Max, Transit and Galaxy use Duratec HE engines). On the 2007 Focus, output is 136 hp (101 kW) at 6000 rpm with 136 ft·lbf (184 N·m) of torque at 4250 rpm. The 2007 Focus sold in the US states of CA, NY, MA, VT and ME comes with the required PZEV emissions 20E version which produces 130 hp (97 kW) at 6000 rpm with 129 ft·lbf (175 N·m) of torque at 4000 rpm. The PZEV is available as an option in border states. The compression ratio for both versions is 10:1. It has an aluminum engine block and aluminum DOHC cylinder heads. The cylinders are lined with cast iron. It uses SFI fuel injection, has 4 valves per cylinder and features fracture-split forged powder metal connecting rods, a one-piece cast crankshaft, and a cast aluminum or reinforced plastic intake manifold. It does not have variable valve timing. The power output is less than the Mazda version which does have VVT.

    The plastic intake manifold on early versions has a major fault due to poor quality materials. The manifold has swirlplates mounted on a square shaft at the aperture where it mounts to the cylinder head. Early 4 cylinder Duratec engines can be ruined when the swirlplates break off and enter a cylinder. Most cases are of single swirlplates but also the shaft can wear and break. Early signs of this fault are evidenced by a ticking noise emanating from the front of the engine. This can occur as early as 25K miles, with failure typically occurring after about 90K miles.
  • 2.3L Duratec – 151hp (113kW) – 154lb-ft (209N-m)
    - Standard on the 2005-2007 Focus ST.

    The Duratec 23 is a 2.3 L (140 CID; 2261 cc) variant of the Mazda MZR 2.3 L engine. Bore is 3.44 inches (87.5 mm) and stroke is 3.70 inches (94 mm). It has an aluminum engine block with cast-in iron cylinder liners and aluminum DOHC cylinder heads. It uses SFI fuel injection, has 4 valves per cylinder and features fracture-split forged powder metal connecting rods and a one-piece cast crankshaft.
  • 2.0L Duratec 20 – 140hp (104kW)
    - Standard on the 2008-2009 Focus (couple and sedan).

    On the 2008 Focus, output is 140 hp (100 kW) at 6000 rpm with 136 ft·lbf (184 N·m) of torque at 4250 rpm. The 2008 Focus sold in the US states of CA, NY, MA, VT and ME comes with the required PZEV emissions 20E version which produces 132 hp (98 kW) at 6000 rpm with 133 ft·lbf (180 N·m) of torque at 4250 rpm.


Focus Transmission Specifications
  • 5 speed MTX-75 manual

    The Ford MTX-75 (Manual TransaXle), is a 5-speed transmission developed by Ford Motor Company for its larger engined front wheel drive models. "75" refers to the distance in millimeters between the main and lay shafts.

    Debuting in 1992, the transmission was developed in tandem with the Zetec family of engines. The transmission is optimized for transferring larger levels of torque than the older iB-series unit used on the Fiesta and Escort models. Other features include the provision of equal length drive shafts (to combat torque steer) and synchromesh on reverse gear.

    The transmission was first used on the Zetec-engined Escort Mk V, but its proper intended application was on the Mondeo and its derivatives (the American Ford Contour, Mercury Mystique and the New Edge Mercury/Ford Cougar). It is also used on the 2.0 L gasoline and all diesel powered versions of the Focus.

    The main change to the unit was to cable operation in 1996 on the face-lifted Mondeo, as the rod-based linkage of the original unit attracted criticism for feeling vague and notchy.

    The open differential can be replaced by a plated or ATB Differential for motorsport use - Kaaz and Quaife offer suitable units.

    Though reliable for some, many full out race car drivers dislike them.
  • 6 speed Getrag 285 Transverse manual (SVT)

    Getrag (sometimes written GETRAG) is a leading manufacturer of automobile manual transmissions. The company was founded on 1 May 1935 in Ludwigsburg, Germany by Hermann Hagenmeyer as the Getriebe- und Zahnradfabrik Hermann Hagenmeyer AG ("Transmission and gear factory Hermann Hagenmeyer AG"). Today, the company is allied with the Dana Corporation, Volvo and the Ford Motor Company, but supplies transmissions to most auto manufacturers including General Motors, Daimler AG, Fiat, Porsche, BMW (Mini (BMW)), Toyota and the Volkswagen Group. Chief competitors include Aisin and ZF.

    Getrag recently entered into two new alliances with Ford and Chrysler to produce the Dual Clutch Powershift Transmission at two new plants in North America - one in Kokomo, Indiana and the other in Mexico; production will begin in 2008 for DCx (Tipton, IN), 2009 for Ford (Mexico) and then an additional DCx volume out of Mexico in 2010. The headquarters for the new division, Getrag Transmissions Corporation (or GTC), is located in Sterling Heights, MI.

    The Dual Clutch Transmission combines the advantages of a manual and an automatic transmission, and is more energy efficient than either. Shifting between gears will be unnoticeable to passengers. Two main versions will be produced: a "wet" clutch version which utilizes hydraulic fluid for shifting and a "dry" clutch version which uses electronic motors to control the clutch.
  • 5 speed IB5 (CVH/SPI Engine only)

    The IB-series manual transmissions are a series of manual transaxles produced by Ford in Europe for its front wheel drive automobiles.

    The original version (IB4) was a fully synchronised 4-speed introduced in 1976 for the first generation Ford Fiesta. Following the introduction of the third generation Escort, a five speed version (IB5) was introduced in 1982. The ultimate version is IB5+, manufactured only in Brazil, that fits engines as big as 2.0 liter.

    The biggest change to the unit over its production run was for the introduction of the Focus in 1998, when the rod based shifting linkage was changed to cable operation, and the adoption of a hydraulic clutch mechanism.

    Earlier versions of the unit have one weak area; the differential bearings have a tendency to break up after around 80,000 miles. If left unchecked, this problem can result in the driveshaft grinding away the gearbox casing. The first sign of this problem is the speedometer ceasing to function.
  • 4 speed 4F27E automatic (Zetec, Duratec, SPI)

    The 4F27E is a 4-speed automatic transaxle for transverse engine use. It was jointly developed by Ford Motor Company and Mazda, which calls the unit the FN4A-EL.

    The 4F27E is a 4-speed automatic with an added overdrive and is completely electronic, with all shifts controlled by solenoids. It has a four-element torque converter that includes a torque converter clutch and geartrain with two planetary gearsets, a transfer-shaft gear final drive, and a differential.
