This for maintaining the hotter air in the tire/strengthen against the rotational force exerted on the tire at high speeds I would guess. But does it also help with turn responsiveness and cornering ability or is this primarily the job of the tread design and compound?
I dunno, michilan has some ZR rated tires with a damn soft side wall.
