Believe me, if any of the top autocrossers in the country thought that a Focus would be competitive at the National level then they would be driving one. The Mini Cooper has been successful because it is a contender right out of the box. The 2007 model is competitive in expert hands with only a set of lightweight wheels with DOT race tires. In previous years the Toyota Celica, Mazda Miata and the Dodge Neon were the cars to have. Of course it helped that Dodge was paying some hefty contingency money.
