Cause...you'd end up with a short shifter, but
not a short
throw shifter.
The FRPP STS (or Steeda...same thing) also have a revised pivot point which drastically shortens the throws.
You wouldn't have that advantage by just cutting the stocker.

What's stripping?
The bolt head, or the threads on the bolt itself.
I'm assuming the bolt head.
You really need the allen head socket (as shown in pic) and not just a small hand wrench.
By using the socket on a 3/8" drive, you can put a lot more downforce on the bolt head to keep it from stripping.

That's an odd size bolt, especially factoring in the allen head cap.
