Talking New SVT in Fort Collins, CO

Hello!
Last week I picked up myself a SVT I found in Golden.

Que wall of text!

2002 silver, with 73k miles. From what I can tell it's 100% stock.
-Sunroof
-6spd
-Red/black interior, heated seats (dunno if that's factory or an additional option)
-Subwoofer and 6disk cd changer (again, not sure if it's an option or not)

So far, I love it. I've never owned American, never planned to, but it happened.

Some problems I've noticed, maybe you can help:
-Under heavy electrical load (headlights/fogs, stereo, seat warmers all on) my odometer back light flickers
-Last night my gauge needles and dash lights started dancing while I was driving home (only did it once for about 4 seconds) then my traction control light illuminated
-minor minor clunking/whirling noise coming from inside dash or near firewall when I turn the car off, can't even hear it with the stereo on
-strange knocking noise while in neutral, clutch engaged at a stop; goes away when I depress clutch petal.
-CD player is really finicky, sometimes plays CDs fine, sometimes it won't play them, and sometimes it skips like a motherfer

My conclusions:
-Needs new alternator
-Might be needing a new clutch sooner than later

If you're interested, I can post some pictures some time this week

About me!
I'm Quinn, I'm a college student at CSU, cars are a major hobby, I'm an AutoXer (Team S.S.H.R for those of you who race)

I also own a 1991 white/black Toyota MR2 (V6 swapped last winter, in my garage), which is what I race in. I can also post pictures of this, if you're interested in the Japanese stuffs.

Any of you in the FoCo area? I'd love to meet some of you, so I'll keep an eye out for g2gs that I can attend.

Why do you have to even ask about the MR2 lol. Pics. Camry V6, Avalon?

Alternators aren't too bad. I'm on my 5th one or something, I lost count.

CD Player - I've had problems in cold weather with it. Alabama cold, not CO cold. Probably condensation on the discs.

Classic sign of alternator going out is the needles will fall to 0 but usually that's when it's too late. If stuff is dimming I would go get it load tested at Generic Auto Parts before it strands you. Once the needles fall you're pretty much screwed as far as power goes.

I just bought a new alternator today...$80, figured it was worth a shot.

AutoZone tested my charging system, alternator diodes were the only thing that failed the test. So yeah, new alt.

I'll get some pictures of the Focus soon, but here's my MR2, it's got a 95 Lexus ES300 1MZ-FE in it.

Haha, I think you might live in my old 'hood. I grew up in Fort Collins and went to CSU. My brother texted me the other day that "I think that guy with the MR2 near the movie theater got an SVT Focus, silver." Good times.

As to your problems, the CD players are just hit and miss in these. My friend had an SVT, skipped the majority of the time. My S2 has the 6-disc as well, but it's been mostly good so far.

The clutch might be a worry area. His just went out one day, but those are known to be problematic. Someone else probably has more info on that, or you could do a search.

Welcome!

Edit: I just went and looked at the old thread - his had been clicking for sometime with the clutch engaged similar to what you describe, and then one day it ceased working. It was the clutch assembly.

That's so funny, that's totally me near the theater. I'm sure you've at least heard about the junk yard of cars we've got. Haha.

So I should be looking to replace my clutch soon? Or is it going to be something transmissoon related too?

That is funny. Last time I drove by I feel like there were a bunch of Subarus, too? Also, I don't know which way you go to school, but if you go across Horsetooth on Manhattan there's a yellow Merkur - that was my first car (regret painting it yellow, but hey, it was high school). Guy over there who bought it is crazy about Fords, used to have an SVT Focus but I think he has a Mustang now.

Anyway, I wish I could remember more about the clutch issue, but it was 3 or 4 years ago now and the dealership did the fix, anyway. The cars don't have normal clutches iirc, and you might need to find out if yours has a pre-TSB clutch or the TSB clutch. Best I can do is point you to this thread for more info: Post Clutch Q&A Here

Oh man. I do not like the look of these clutch prices...Yikes.

Also something I noticed, which could be potentially BAD, it seems as though coolant is either leaking out of my valve cover (front driver-side corner) or the thermostat housing just to the right (driver-side) of the valve cover is spraying. Coolant levels remain unchanged, just noticed it tonight, it was more of a stain than anything (wasn't wet or running liquid, just green and greasy looking)

Also, is the Dual-Mass flywheel machinable? That seems to be why the prices are so high for all the clutch kits I've looked at.

Its more than likely the thermostat housing, they are prone to crack and leak. It could also just be a leaky O ring on the thermostat housing.

So aside from the needed repairs, what's the best place to start to make my SVT and more fun daily driver?

Something like a short shifter or stiffer springs? I'm not looking to make this car an AutoXer like my MR2, but I certainly want it to look good and drive fun.

Oh! Also, where's a good place to shop for Focus parts(performance or/and oem)
