I'm changing my 2012 S sedan from the stock 195/65-15 inch wheels, to 16 inch. My wheels will be 16x7's. I want to go with BFG, KDW2's or BFG, GForce Sport Comp 2's. I don't care about noise or ride comfort, I really enjoy feeling and hearing the car work.
My question is to someone who's done some track time. I'd like to run a 225/50-16, instead of the stock 215/55-16 tire. I figure a shorter, wider tire, that's the same weight as stock would be the better set up for cornering. I may be completely wrong. I'd definitely appreciate some experienced opinions.

I agree, wider with shorter sidewall will perform better. Shorter sidewall will provide a better feel while cornering.

Thanks wrc_fan, I think I'm going to go with the 225 KDW2's.

If you going to use them on the track I would go with the Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1 Star Spe, since you have a 2012 I can’t say if your need to roll the fenders or not.

Thanks Schroeder02. Man, very tempting! I'm betting the Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1 Star Spec is a much better track tire. It rates great on tire rack, and costs the same as the KDW2. I hadn't really considered the Dunlop.
I wanted to go with the BFG, GForce or KDW, because they're manufactured here, and I had talked with a guy at work who I saw ran the KDW's on his WRX track car/ daily driver, and recommended them. Very tempting!

I haven’t run the KDW’s or seen any one run them on track. But from experience looking at the way the tread blocks look they are probably going to tore up on track in dry conditions.

I'm glad I posted this thread. After getting your responses, I've gone back and begun reading reviews from worst to best on the BFGs and the Dunlops. Schroeder02, do you run the Direzza Z1s yourself?
My only track experience with my 2012 Focus, has been one track day at Willow Spring's Horse Thief Mile. The stock front Conti's shoulders are badly torn up from that.

Yes till I went to race tires I used the Direzza Z1s, they lasted me two seasons I think. I bought a second set I leave on my track car all the time, I still run them on the track is its wet or cold in the morning.

That sounds exactly like the tire I'm looking for. My wheels should be here tomorrow, so I think I'll go with experience and buy the Dunlops. Thanks for taking the time to clue me in Schroeder02.

The dunlop star specs are a great option for a track day tire. Hankook RS-3s are another favorite option, and they have a higher tolerance for heat.
