Best Engine Setup for Auto-X
 
OK so I do autocross and I'm not sure which direction I should go with my engine. I'm kind of hesitant to go with a turbo set up because of the turbo lag. I was looking into roots type supercharges because I heard that they will make power all the time which is what I want for autocross. Their is also an NA build which won't give me as much horsepower. This is the cheapest but I am not as fond of this option because it won't really give me as much power as the other options. So any imput you guys have would be great[thumb] .

Just start with what you have now and get a feel for how your car is, then determine what kind of power adder (if you feel you need or still want one) is best for you. I'm sure most folks here on the forum would vouch for the SC or a nice all motor set-up.

N/A definitely. And this is why;

1) FI will bump you right into Street Mod at least. From there, you have a choice to whether spend another $20K or so to be somewhat competitive in your region, or spend far less and not be competitive anywhere. You'll be competing against cars with a lot less weight, a LOT more horse, far more grip, etc. etc. I honestly don't think an SM Focus could make it beyond a local level.

2) Less money on the motor is more money on the suspension, where it really matters in AutoX.

3) N/A engines are the easiest to modulate and control on track, giving you more precision, which makes a HUGE difference on course.

Don't do anything until you get a Limited Slip Differential.

After that, Supercharging is the way to go. Vortech's design is beautifully simple.

spercharge that puppy. but it is true that you will change in class, and not really have much of a chance. But its just for fun anyway right?

If you needed anything, id say a JRSC, but N/A i think would be better. Thats why i sold my Procharger and did some engine work for N/A.

I say NA, cause I feel that money would be better spent on suspension for scca. smooth & persice driving will get you alot further than brute force![thumb] , just ask WD40 , I've seen him run down some pretty fast cars on track! and he's mostly stock svtf

btw, tires make a world of difference too! just watch out, cams will put you in SM ! like me..ooops , guess i'll have to just drive faster wooohoo 1 month to go[race]

What tires are you driving on and what class are you in now? Before spending any money on the engine, I'd make sure you were running on some of the best rubber available for you. I've always felt when I autocross that I didn't need more power, I needed more traction. There's a limit to power on the tight courses of autocross, and I think you will find little improvement elsewhere. If you want some proof, I'll just give you the results of the raw times of what happened yesterday at my autocross.

Our friend Mike, Qtrflash on here, was running SM in his SVT with his JRSC on Goodyear F1 Eagles, stock suspension. His car definitely has the torque to scoot (way better than the stock engine), and his best time was in the 46.xxxs. I'm running on a stock engine with Kumho MXs on stock suspension, and my best time was a 44.xxx. Without the better handling and rubber, more power is going to cost you your traction.

...which is exactly why I suggested you do an LSD first, no matter what mode you choose to increase the power. Inside wheel spin is a Bi#ch.
