Focus Problems

I have an '02 ZX5 and for the last few months I have had problems with the gear shift sticking in park. Of course, this problem surfaced after the warranty expired. Has anyone else had trouble with the gear shift, and if so, what can I do about it?

I assume you've got a manual tranny? I'm not sure this problem sounds familiar, but some may have experienced it...

Gonna move this over to Focus Technical Chat, hope you find an answer!

sounds like a brake light switch problem to me. the switch enables you to move your shifter when you put on your brake. If that's the problem you'll have to have it replaced. I can't get you a price if you want one I'm a ford tech.[thumb]

I agree with jwom81. The brake on/off (BOO) switch will cause symptoms similar to what your talking about. I don't think they are that hard to change but that is something jwom81 could answer. keep us posted

If the brake light wiring has a short, the brake light fuse will blow, and you can't get the car out of park (auto trans). You have to use the bypass method (little access cover next to the shift lever, push in with a screwdriver). Have you checked to see if your brake lights work? If not, change the fuse, and you'll probably have to replace one or both brake light bulbs.
