MK1 Focus the greatest car of the past 25 years

UK's Autoexpress has crowned the first-generation Focus the greatest car of the past 25 years, streaking ahead of such automotive marvels as the 380km/h McLaren F1 (third place) and the 407km/h, R13.25 million Bugatti Veyron (seventh).

I came across a cool write up from a MK1 owner in South Africa and his story of his MK1 Focus.

Excerpt from the article "Indeed, every time my wife raises the sore topic of upgrading, I give her the same lecture about the perfection of its gearbox, suspension, steering and road-holding and the sheer, brilliantly thought-out positioning of the controls, with everything just where you want it.

“It’s impossible to upgrade from a Ford Focus,” I keep telling her, “because it’s quite simply the best car in the world.”

Is that like an automotive version of The Onion?

TheGlassMaker 09-06-2013 06:49 AM

Well the car has been in production since 98. Its won what 60 awards?

How many cars can say that?

That seems like an incredibly scientific and well-cited figure.

This us awesome, thanks for sharing. I still own my Mki, most people will not understand why it won if they have never owned one. Would I of chosen it as number one, nah lol.

Very nice article! I had 3 white Ford Tauruses before my Focus, and I was always marveling at how simple technology that is reliable every time works so well! I got so many compliments on my plain '95 Mercury Sable (yes, one of the Tauruses) that I would not want any other car. My friend bought an almost new pickup truck and had to constantly show it off to everyone because no one would talk about it...everyone simply knew what it was and that was that.

I also remember reading a book about European cars that had a quote, any old engineer can make a water pump for a Rolls Royce (as they design the best thing they can), but it takes a genious to make one for a Chevy (as it has to work every single time, in every kind of condition imaginable, as well as not break down and leave the user stranded). It simply amazes me at how complicated perfectly level thought can be!

Great article, thank you!

I've always thought the Focus fit the monicker of the "peoples car" better than VWs did.

This last line: "Average? Middle-of-the-road? Ineffably ordinary? If you insist. But like the original Ford Focus, the way of life that goes with it is also the best", corresponds with the sinking middle-class, American Dream. Nothing extravagant; just a little slice of your own in the happy middle.

If he really loved the car he'd certainly be out driving it and would have no time to write a lengthy article about the car/s.

TheGlassMaker 09-07-2013 12:36 PM

Unless he's writing while he's driving. eh?
