Transmission Review

I'm interesting in buying a focus and have been on the search for an SVT, but I don't know whether to consider a mk2 focus. I won't settle for an automatic. I'm set on a SVT for now because of the 6 speed Getrag trans, but I don't know how the transmission feels in an mk2. Is it similar to the mk1 5 speeds where it feels like you need another gear? Is it the same transmission? We test drove a 07 zx3 with the 5-speed and I believe the 2.0L, but did not like the feel of a missing gear. Are the mk3s and zx4 STs also this way?

The six speed in the SVT is at about the same rpm on the highway as the 5 speed due to being geared for the track. The 5 sp in the mk2 is the same as in the mk 1 and 1.5. The final drive may be slightly different but likely 65mph at around 3,000rpm on the highway is typical for 5th gear on most 4 cylinder cars I've driven.

Yeah, my '09 does about 72 or 73mph at 3k rpm in 5th.

Ok, thanks for clearing that up. I can now add the mk2s back to my list being SVT are so scarce. Thanks!

It's wierd how different the gearing is on these cars!

For mine 5 speed manual, SE, it is:
80: 3000
75: 2800
70: 2600
65: 2400
60: 2200

I think there were two gearing options in 08 depending on which trim you had but more due to the change in wheel size i think. 3.15 and 3.31 were the ratios i think who knows if the following year they changed it again for the 17" wheels. Then you have the automatics....

Imo i feel the trans could use two more gears. One in the middle and a taller final.

I thought this was the same issue in my truck so i added a 2 speed behind the trans and transfer case giving me a total of 20 forward gears and 4 reverse .... so many to choose from

Before this, I was used to driving trucks and jeeps with granny 1st gears. I'd like a granny gear so I can just let out the clutch and go - wouldn't even needs the slightest amount of gas to take off.

And I definitely could use another gear. I'm cruising, not racing at 65MPH. Could drop the RPM by a bit and not hurt anything.

It's higher, at least compared to the early Zetec/MTX-75 Foci. The SVT could really use a 7th gear if you ask me. But, even thought the RPMs buzz around 3100 at 70mph in 6th, there's just enough torque to not have to downshift to pass on interstate roads. You definitely need to downshift to pass at 55 mph though. Preferably to third. [:)]

OP, you'll just have to drive all kinds of Foci and see which you like best! [cheers]

That makes me feel more comfortable then. I figured because of the 6th gear the svt would cruise at 65mph at a lower rpm. It never really occurred to me in my mind that it is a raced inspired vehicle with shorter gear ratios.

80MPH is 3K RPM in 5th gear on my 08' Coupe
