Best focus for reliability and mileage?

Hi everyone,

I currently have a 05 Mercury sable that I would like to sell to buy a focus. But I'm not sure what year and transmission. Are there certain years to stay away from?

My 98 5spd Corolla got 35 mpg consistently driving highway/country road driving and I would like a focus that got around that same mileage. Is there a big difference in mileage with manuals vs automatics with the focus?

the 2012 and up are best for mileage possibly over 40mpg hwy. the automatics are rated better than the manuals. there are some reliability issues with the automatic (dual clutch automated manual).

the 2005 to 2011 are good too. manual is better than the automagic.

The only one to avoid is the 00-04 SPI SOHC engine- regardless of transmission. The transmission improved in 03 for all engines. Both of the other engines- the Zetec or Duratec get good fuel economy, but most fall short of 36 mpg. The newer Focis get that sort of mileage.

I`ve got a 2002 ZX5 zetech automatic . With 286,000 I still get 30 mpg on the highway . And as proven late last night , it`ll still do 100mph . At 300k I`ll be looking for another `02 !
