2008 Focus - Is there any way to flush the cooling system WITHOUT removing the T-stat?
 
Hey Focus bretheren!

I had a separate question from my antifreeze question.

Since removing the T-stat seems to be extremely difficult on the Duratec, is there any way to flush the cooling system (engine block and heater core) without removing the thermostat?

If anyone has any input on this, I'd appreicate it as I'm going to try to do this tomorrow.

A long time ago when I drove a VW, early on I drilled a " (.25") hole in the top of the T-stat to allow the fluid in the upper part of the engine to drain down when flushing. Worked like a charm, and never looked back. Haven't tried it on my Focus yet, I've got a while to go before I do, but I'm going to try it. GL

Just warm up the engine so that the t-stat opens. You can then flush it without and issue. The coolant will flow right past.

Thanks for the info! Do you see any potential harm with the head gasket if the engine is up to operating temp and I'm flowing cold water from a hose into a hot engine?

That was my only concern with doing it that way?

Nope. That's how the "professional" machines work too (if you were to have a shop flush it). They just push the new "cold" coolant in behind the old coolant to flush it out.

I bought a coolant flush kit, it says it's supposed to be installed in the header hose line that goes to the intake manifold...so I'll have to look at that...

Flushing a hot engine with cold water isnt going to work , the first tablespoon of cold water the the thermostat gets it closes

The only way to properly flush the system is to REMOVE the thermostat flush the system then replace it with a new 180 thermostat

Those were my thoughts from the beginning and I agree 100% with you, however, Ford in all their infinane wisdom decided to put the thermostat in the Duratec UNDER the intake manifold, so you'd have to remove the intake to get to the T-stat housing.

I spliced a T into the heater hose line that runs from the heater core to the T-stat housing (there is a heater hose next to the larger Lower Rad hose on the Tstat housing) I flushed it that way and seemed to get most if not all the old coolant out of the block and heater core that way, but yes, I would have preferred to remove the T-stat and flush that way, but it's just not practical on these Duratec engines, unless the T stat itself has a issue, then you have no choice.

Everyone should remove the old thermostat and go to a 180 anyway in my opinion , flush why it is out
