custom power steering lines?
 
hey guys

i ripped out my old power sterring system rack pump lines everything

im rplacing with a new rack and a new pump but want to make custom lines and have them going to an oil cooler in between my rad and intercooler

has anyone ever made a custom braided lines for the power steering? if so how did you do it?

my main problem is the tube ends that go into the rack are o-right type push in held by a bolt and plate. while the ones to the pump are threaded so that part is easy.

im thinking of cutting the lines going to the rack from the rack just before the rubber hose and braising on a fitting to convert to -AN. or flaring the other end and doing it that way.

Go to a plumbing supplier, i think i know what you are saying, and allmost anything is possible with the right tools /supplies they should be able to.show you options or possibly different products to use (connections) ive done hydronics which is the same theory of heat transfer, and the options are endless(sort of) never done what are saying though :-). GL

My car has a metal custom line that was put in by the previous owner, you could try bending one yourself.

Ummm! Think this through a bit. Power steering = hydraulics. Means you have a 'high' pressure side and a low pressure side. The 'cooler' would have to be on the low pressure side, where it would do nothing (other than impede flow back to the pump). The 'high' pressure side fittings need to be formed pipe (you found that) OR high pressure hydraulic hose WITH proper end fittings JOINED with a multi-ton 'band' gizmo. Recommend you don't purchase any hose or what not until you find a shop that has the machines to make small diameter hydraulic hoses as they prob won't guarantee the piece unless they use there own stuff. Low pressure side you can just use screw type band clamps.

How does an engine oil cooler work?
How does a transmission oil cooler work?
How does a engine coolant radiator work?

ALL are on the return side.


He knows the cooler is on the low side and never said he wanted to route the high side through it ...

Your thinking 'heat' without considering the source of the heat. Engine/transmission heat is due primarily to thermatic(?)/frictional inefficiency. hydraulic heat is due to pressure. An easily seen example are the fined air lines coming out of an air compressor (to cool the air before it goes into the tank). All the heat gets released by the high pressure side line and ram. That being said, I would question also why the OP is concerned about heat in this regard. Automotive pumps are the smallest of the small. They don't make much heat to begin with.

Check out dominanteng.com the guy has made custom ps fittings for the rack so you can add your own lines. This guy makes a lot of custom parts for the focus.

reason for the lines and the cooler is i had to remove all the lines in fron for my intercooler. that and its also a "show car" so i want to clean up all the ugly black rubber hoses that were rotting away anyway. i will still be having hard lines come off the rack and where those "ugly" lines were i am replacing with braded hose. i work at a performance shop we have the hydraluic crimper and everything for custom lines. we make custom brake lines ,fuel lines, clutch lines daily.

I have his fitting.
Personally, I'd look for something else. It weeps. Might just need a new o-ring though. That and the wait for parts ...
