CV re-install after SPI engine drop and swap
 
pulled CVs from the trans for the common SPI issue.
to take junk engine/auto trans out.....

was rather jaw struck at the amount of force needed to pop out.
took a big ol bar and a big WaMo with a hammer, to get them out.


now with the short block and trans back in, i can not get the CVs to seat.
thought the passenger side was in and went on for the drivers side and about an 1" out is as close as it will get.

after some time i went back to the passenger side and it poped out by hand...

the drivers side has a little clip in the end groove, yet to pull passenger side as i gave up for the day in stead of braking something. with brute strength.


this must be one of fords ("better ideas") [^]

You have to pop the drivers side back in, it may take some force. The passenger side is held in with the carrier bearing.

so no normal pop in for the passenger side??
it just slides in...??
I had to pop it to get it out?


but drivers side i gotta beat on like a ape man to get in?????

If you 'popped' the passenger side you may have broke the bracket that holds it against the back side of the block - it just slides in AND out once the two bolts on the bracket are removed.

I prefer assurance of not cracking the ATX case so I didn't 'pry' on the drivers side. Instead I ordered one of these for $34/free shipping - OTC7508 and used it with a loaner slide hammer and 'claw' attachment.

passenger side, carrier mount was off.

and still had to force it.


these CVs are in good order, only reason for removal is the engine drop and swap.

The new axle compared to the old axle, side by side, showed no differences?

What brand are the new axles?

im not replacing the CVs

Thank you for stating that explicitly. It removes any doubt or confusion that they are original\previously working axles that are undamaged and serviceable on a known running car. Good luck - maybe someone else knows what went wrong.

well i pulled bolth out and started with the drivers side.

then put the passenger side in.
they seem to be in??? no shiny steel exposed lol.

carrear bearing is clamped down right in the middle of the bracket.

the CVs seem compressed there's no real travel in the shaft is this normal?
im talking about the shaft that's between the two CVs, shudent there be a half inch or so of free float or so????

i could go look at one of the other two i have for comparison, but there manual trans models..
or am i just being paranoid....
