Semi rough idle and shutter under initial throttle

I've been trying to figure this out for months and am at my wits end. the car is a 2000 Focus SE Wagon. It has 101k on it right now. Here is what happens. Just above idle (wish I knew the RPM) the car vibrates quite a bit. The idle actually sounds fine, but there is a vibration that can be felt throughout the car. When you depress the throttle it gets worse for just a second and then once it has throttle it's fine if you keep your foot on the gas just a little. If you turn on the lights or hit the window button it gets worse. the other thing is I think the bearings in the alt are squealing.

While it's driving it's fine. Only happens when sitting and on initial acceleration. Here's what's been done so far:

Plugs (me), wires and coil pack (previous owner), the rest are all me, new PCV valve, new IAC, cleaned TB, cleaned MAF, replaced cracked air box w/ new filter, new battery, checked for vacuum leaks, tranny flush (cooler as well) w/ new filter, new TPS. I've checked the motor mounts and they are fine.

Originally the car was rough right at idle. When I changed the PCV the shutter/roughness moved up the RPMs.

I want to change out the alternator or at least get it tested but I don't know if it will help. could this be a problem with the wiring from the alt to the battery and/or the grounds? What about a transmission problem? I do occasionally get a hang in acceleration, which is why I changed out the TPS. It's very rare though and I drive the car a lot every day for work. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks

Get the Alt checked out, having a extra "load" on the car, esp at idle will cause what you are experiencing, just take it to Autozone to have the charging system checked out, you dont have to remove it.

I had this occurring and it appeared random. Then one time it lasted long enough for me to get out of the car and listen, which I heard sucking air. The intake tube was rubbing on the PCV valve hose (on top of the valve cover driver's side) and wore a hole in it (vacuum leak). When I plugged it with my finger rough idle went away, unplugged it and back it came. So you can try looking for vac leaks...

Edit: I should read the whole post, you've already checked for vac leaks. Donnyd21's answer sounds pretty plausible in that case.

thanks for the replies, I've been swamped at work. Plan on going to get the charging system checked out today after work. I'll let you know what they say

charging system tested fine.

I am going to check the motor mounts and tranny mount again.

my_beautious_ZX3 03-08-2013 09:17 AM

how did you "check" them?

mounts may or may not show visible signs of wear. But if you've got a 13-year old Focus that still has factory mounts, then it's a safe bet that that's your vibration problem.

It's a frequent topic on this forum, so use the search box and you'll find some useful threads discussing Ford vs. aftermarket mounts.

I checked for obvious failure. I ordered the parts already, going to just replace them

poneypower 03-08-2013 09:56 AM

I was in the process of ordering the parts when I noticed a couple things. Here are the part numbers I have:

1S4Z-7M121-PA - driver side
YS4Z-6038-BA - passenger side
YS4Z-6068-MA - lower

Can anyone tell me if these are right? They are telling me that the lower is only for a manual transmission, I have the auto and that the passenger side is only for the Zetec. Are these interchangeable between models?

poneypower 03-11-2013 11:09 AM

ok I got the correct part numbers for the SPI

5S4Z6068BC
YS4Z6038FA
1S4Z7M121NA
