2001 ZX3 Newbie question

Hello everyone. I am a Subaru convert. The 07 WRX wagon I had was fun (too much fun) but too expensive to maintain, insure, etc. for the overall quality of the car. My ex gf had a 2001 Focus with well over 150K on it and, despite numerous rattles and noises (and cosmetic damage) it zipped around remarkably well. So, as soon as I decided to sell the money pit WRX I found myself a black 2001 ZX3 with 84K on it. It had some minor body damage and the paint is terrible BUT it drove well and passed my mechanic's test.

I've had the ZX3 for about 2.5 years now (it just hit 100K) and I spent a little money chasing a coolant leak before it completely cracked when I was out in the desert! But, I got the whole coolant system replaced, along with the hoses, and while I was at it, had the timing belt replaced :)

Since then, minimal problems. Including that mess, I've spent about $1,100 in repairs AND maintenance on the car. It drives quite well and feels strong, except I'm getting the top motor mount replaced to see if it stops the annoying and LOUD vibrations while driving!

I just had almost all of the factory recommended 100K maintenance done on the car and I'm hoping to drive it for as long as I can. That being said, I'm seriously considering investing in some performance/gas mileage upgrades for the little guy. It does have the dual cam Zetec engine.

Where do you recommend I start? Chip? Intake? Exhaust? Other? Thanks!

Buy a tuner from Tom $400 plus s/h His name is Turbotom1. Start with that and a CAI plus 2.5 or 3 inch exhaust and svt head for the best power but there are others that will give you better than stock power. Then find build thread and look around for what kind of power your looking for n/a or boots. See what others are doing then take ideas. Also your leak was probable the thermostat housing common problem but you might want to replace the valve cover gasket if you haven't already.

Thanks for the reply. I've seen a lot of ppl on here suggesting CAIs but I thought those were only really effective for Turbocharged engines. Also, I've seen tuners advertised for around $150 online. Is this a "too good to be true" scenario like I thought? $400 sounds more like I expected. Cobb tuner for my WRX was $800. I'll check out Turbotom1, thx. Do you think there is much point in installing a 3" exhaust without getting SVT headers? I think you're right. That is where the leak was :) I haven't replaced the valve cover gasket but I'll check it and see if it needs it, thanks!

Getting the CAI will allow it to atomize the gas and air better which means better compression. I only suggest a 3" if your going to turbo. As for the tuner getting it from Tom he will update you for life free for n/a focui and the ones that are 140 are fake but if they do work it's a cheap tune that will probably mess the ecu up. But it all depends on what kind of power you want to make I think 250whp is max for n/a engines but 350whp is what most turbos get but can go way past that.

After 150whp you need tall money or machining skills to go higher with a N/A Zetec. Boosting will cost close to the same but, the gains are much better.

Yeah that's why I'm going with boost but n/a will allow for less problems than boost has.

The best bang for the buck is find a used SVT header , add a TB , good exh , cold air intake and a tune

This will net you an honest 20HP+ to the wheels and feel like a new car

[confused][scratch][facepalm][???:)][80?] where did you get your information from guy. [giddy] the focus will never be able to get 250hp N/A! with a basic bottom end turbo kit youd be lucky to get that. if i were you, id read up on the focus a little bit more, leave the information giving to the elders that actually know what there talking about, and get some more posts under your belt before giving out incorrect information.

I've seen a few people get like 220 to 250 n/a in the dyno area so whatever you say. So why don't you look at the dyno's on here a little more before you assume your the grand master because you have more post. If anyone is a focui master it would be Tom and a few other people not you nor I. Having a lot of post doesn't mean you know a lot there are people out there that have never been online or even posted on this awesome site that knows more than most of the users on here. Quality will always be better than quantity.

But anyways like I said look up build threads and see what their making and check out the dyno threads. That will honestly be your bet.
