New Header-Sounds like a Can Rattling

Hey guys,

I installed an FSWERKS header on my '10 SES and I did not have a new exhaust manifold gasket. So I re-used the old one. It seemed like it was not in the best shape, but that's all I had atm.

So when we started it up, it had a horrible clattering sound. It freaked us out but ultimately we decided it was probably the gasket. Drove it, seemed fine, power seemed a little diminished. So in the morning I look, noticed the bolts on the bottom were barely tightened. I tightened them down, and noticed a diminishing in the sound. However it still sounds like a rattling can, very ricey and embarrassing. Thankfully I can hear the big roar a bit better.

Plus I no longer smell exhaust now that its tight. I'm gonna get the exhaust manifold gasket in a couple days. Hopefully I'm not missing something.

Oh, another thing. The heat shields got taken off from around the old one and did not get replaced? Do I need to put them back on? There's a big hole in them from the old O2 sensor placement.

they probably won't fit anyway. and just replace the gasket.

Replace the gasket, drive it and let it cool and then recheck the bolts.

like said above= retorque the bolts. You will hear some header ping, which is normal. Do you have a tune?

I've re-tightened them alot and it's definitely helped. On my day off I'm gonna check the flex pipes and then install the new gasket. I just put the tune on there, haven't tested it out yet.

sounds like your going to be re-tighting trough out the life span of the car which is normal and annoying for headers. Get you some lock retainers and you'll never have any more problems.

Replace the gasket with a new one and follow the above process. But be prepared to start adding mufflers to quiet down this ricer noise your hearing lol I have 4 mufflers under my focus with the fswerks header and flex and have a nice deep tone finally.

I kinda did things backwards. I actually already have an FSWERKS stealth, so once the gasket is done I think I should be in good shape.

Also, do you guys think I need heat tape? Because the old heat shields got bent and I don't think there's any place to attach them to, so I am slightly worried about the O2 sensor being close to all that heat.

if the header has an o2 sensor hole with a plug in it make sure the plug is tight, i had a header from ebay once and it had an extra o2 sensor hole and the plug was actually loose and rattling

I'd leave the header the way it is. It is ceraramic coated. I used the original part of the heat shield to cover the alt. The heat shield is held together by taps. Just be careful undoing the taps as not to damage them.
