felt under carrige "protector"

hey everyone, not really new here, but lurked since i got my oxford white '12 se 5-door back in april (i think it was). racked up almost 16k miles since then. great daily driver & a lot better gas mileage than my previous car (2004 pontiac gto, 5.7l, a4, minor bolt ons). :D

anywho, does that felt under carrige "protector" serve any purpose? my old gto had a skid plate & that actually served a purpose (protection). plan on changing my oil tomorrow & wondering if i can leave the felt cover off.

the only mods ive done to my se 5-door is synthetic 5w-20, k&n drop in, exhaust tip, sylvania silverstar ultra lows & fogs & wind deflectors.

oh the names louie btw :D

Its an aero shield which also functions as an NVH absorbance panel to help smooth the flow of air under the car so it doesn't get dragged on the under carriage. Its actually quite sophisticated in design.

If you're willing to sacrifice the aero benefit as well as the fuel economy and protection of the engine compartment go right ahead.

Its a felt sound absorbance panel on top of a plastic or fiberglass core.

It does serve a purpose. Aerodynamics. It reduces drag and improves airflow on the bottom of the car.

thanks for the replies guys. figured it had to do something with airflow. thanks again.

Mine came loose on one side somehow and is negatively effecting the aero qualities of my focus. Fuel economy went way down.

I have an appointment to have the dealer take care of it tomorrow morning.
