ATX shift kit
 
I've seen complaints on here and else where about the 4f27e (1st gen focus axt) having low line pressure. well I found a kit that replacs a spring and ups the pressure. I'd seen a performance shop ups the pressure by about 5%

Has anyone done this to theirs?

Shift Correction Package

This valve body kit deals with these problems:

* Soft shifts and flairs
* Premature band failure
* Code P0741 (T.C.C. slippage)
* Broken solenoid P.R. valve spring
* Worn or damaged accumulator bores
* Accumulator Buddy "Tool" Included
* Newly designed accumulator pistons included

The 4F27E kit includes Superior's patent pending billet 1-2 and neutral/ drive dual sealing ring accumulator pistons. This kit also contains one of our patent pending Accumulator Buddy brushes so no other tools or fixtures are required. The pistons and brush allow you to reuse previously discarded cases that would not have sealed due to premature ware. The 4F27E kit also includes a new, stronger solenoid pressure regulator valve spring to replace the frequently broken stock spring.

I looked all over the net for user experiences with that kit, couldn't find any.

I have considered giving it a shot, all my auto's have firmed up shifts except the Focus.

I found a mag that did a build up on the trans and they increased line pressure to make the focus better. So that's why I considered it.

Note the english used there in description, It may very well mean the spring is stronger to not break, that may have nothing to do with bumping up line pressure. A simple different heat treat on replacement spring would do that. I think they are thinking in terms of recovering stock factory performance only there.

The ECU control's the ATX psi , if you want to raise the trans psi and change the shift points the only way to do this is with a tune

Lentec claims to increase line pressure w/o getting into the ECU program.

The computer dictates the EPC solenoid's output state, but I don't think it has any way to reference the actual pressure.

It would be kinda like changing fuel injector size on an open loop control system, it will flow more than it thinks it is.

There could easily be a base mechanical pressure setting that solenoids modify........

It's usually done by enlarging a hole in the separator plate, and I do see a drill bit in the kit photo.

Nah, most I've played with actually had a pressure setting bolt, or a spring changed out. More than one spring shown in kit too. Drilling holes is more of a momentary timing and quick/slow pressure rise mod thing, or pressure relief rather than increase. Its' result is usually a TEMPORARY effect. For pressure regulation to the entire trans the effect has to be bigger than that. I wouldn't be surprised if the drill was to open a restriction to those small accumulators to let the errant one fill a bit faster when worn trans is cold. Obvious from kit parts that the accumulators are a heavy wear issue.

Interesting reading the hydraulic flowchart for the trans. There are TWO pressure regulators, a main and one for solenoids A/B. The main one is spring loaded like all, but in this case the EPC solenoid pipes output into that spring chamber to add to the spring's tension and modify the line pressure itself. Simply adding a shim or a stiffer spring would definitely bump up the base line pressure with no added input from the EPC. Line then goes to the solenoid regulator to be modded again and then tees back into EPC input that seems to get regulated by blowing off into space like a regular bypass on an oil pump, just electrically regulated instead of sprung valve. I could not find in/out circuits like the other solenoids have, only in at EPC. A delicate balance going on between line, EPC and sols. A/B...............

I found an article searching "4f27e" in google. They built a race trans for a zx5 that they were going to turbo.
They uoed the line pressure about 5% mechanically because they didn't want to get in to the ecm. Write of story claims it made a big difference in the shifts.

Everything else I read is people complaining about the low line pressure of these transmissions. I've only built stardards lately and mostly big CDL ones. I haven't onpened a ATX trans since the 700r4's
