R&R front powerdoor lock actuator

2007 Focus SES. I was told the actuator, which apparently includes the latch assembly needs to be replaced. Garage wants $325+ for part and labor of which $200 is for the part. I would like to do it myself if possible. I am pretty good with tools and have the time. I just have to locate the part and any special tools (if needed). Can anyone tell me the degree of difficulty of doing this and who might I get the part from? I don't want to bite off more than I can chew but would like to save a hunk of money if possible. ALSO I would like to disable the auto locking feature that locks the doors when the car begins to move. That will reduce the wear and tear and hopefully the other actuators will last longer.

How many threads you going to start over this?

For somebody that majored in auto mechanics, you seem to be making a molehill into a mountain.

Elsolo I majored in auto mechanics when I was 18. I am 62 now and only occasionally work on cars and Only as a last resort; ya dig?

And this will be the last thread. I am new to this forum so excuse the [:)][:)][:)][:)]ups.

Well, there are three threads on this problem right now.
Several pictures so you can see what the parts look like.
Be thankful you can open your door to get at it, the last guy had his door stuck shut.

Have you taken the door panel watershield off yet to take a look?

I have taken part of the weatherstripping off..enough barely enough to put my hand on the actuator. If the job is going to be a bear then I just assume turn it over to a garage and let them wrestle with it. I have a bad back, my knees aren't too good and neither is my eyesight so I don't want to try to do something that is going to be tough.

It's a simple job.
Just take the weathershield off and take a look.
It's not going to become any less intimidating if you don't go out and at least take a look.
I can tell you it's a simple job, other people here have done this repair without drama, and no special tools are required unless you consider TORX bits special.

If you would rather pay somebody else to do it, that is an option.

I'll do that. Hope I can find a replacement that doesn't cost $200+

look on Craigslist under "auto parts" for ford focus cars being parted out by owner.
You should be able to get the parts for $20, door latches are not a high demand used part. That's additional work, so you might prefer just buying one off ebay.

$40 for a whole new one on ebay

Power Door Lock problem

I thought those actuators had a high failure rate. That is what I heard anyway. I am working on pulling the outside door handle now. It should be off by tomorrow. I guess that is part of the key to getting the actuator out of there. So either I will fix it myself or I will mess it all up and the door will not even close either. Guess we will see. I will go through CL and see what I can find. Girl on ebay has actuator/latch for $40.

Fyi, a few nice videos showing the procedure for replacing the door latch assembly on a 2000 thru 2007 Focus can be found on youtube. Please know I'm not suggesting you search for them. I'm only alerting you that they exist in case you're curious. I'm not clear how the guy removed the metal latch unit from the door without removing the attached plastic frame, but it seemed to show that it's possible. I installed and removed the whole subassembly as one system. Someone might chime in to explain how to remove only the latch because it seems to be shielded by the plastic frame. Perhaps somebodyt that did the job a dozen times can work blindly inside the door with a tiny torx wrench and wiggle it out, I don't know.[welcome]
