Driveshaft Installation Trouble
Long story short, I was forced out of my lane in traffic, jumped a curb, and heard a whole lot of scraping from the curb underneath my car. I couldn't tell any obvious damage at first, but now a couple weeks later there's a noise that gets louder and louder the faster I go. It's so loud that it makes conversation almost impossible.

I diagnosed this as a broken CV joint. I had just replaced my driveshafts in June, and when I pulled the passenger side out and put the new one back in last time, I had absolutely no difficulty. It slid right out and back into the trans. However, I had to pound this one out and it was quite difficult. Now I'm trying to push the new one back in (exact same brand as the replacement) without much luck.

Are there any tips, tricks, or concerns you could help me with? :\

If there is a spring clip at the differential splines check that it is not expanded too far.

When inserting the axle, start the axle in the hole and turn slightly till you feel the splines grab, then push hard.

Which side of the axle are you having a hard time with: the transmission end, or the end that goes into the wheel hub?

If you need to pound on the hub end harder than normal to get it out of the splines, you might want to consider servicing the wheel bearing and hub while you have it apart. Bearings really don't like being retained by the outer race while you pound the inner race with a hammer, it peens the balls into the races.

Are you sure it's not a bad wheel bearing from the impact?

It's possible that you did damage the shaft (not broken, if it was broken, it wouldn't transmit power at all), but not probable.

Well I got it back together. I was having difficulty with the transmission side of the driveshaft. Apparently it doesn't hurt to loosen up the bracket a little (coming off the engine) on both sides of the driveshaft to get it tucked in there.

I haven't driven yet, but I'm about to, in the middle of the snowstorm. Hopefully this resolved the problem because the CV Joint definitely does have some play in it. I just replaced my wheel bearings when I did the driveshafts the first time so hopefully this solves the issue and the bearing doesn't have to be done again...

the wheel bearing suggestion was only if you had to hammer the heck out the the axle to get it out of the hub, using the bearing as an anvil.

passenger side always comes out easier, drivers side takes a pop with a prybar, and the above comment is correct when installing.

Found the issue with why this was difficult to install and why there was an issue in the first place.. my differential is torn up and needs to be replaced.

Any idea where to find a new differential other than from a dealership?

I bought mine from Autozone, lifetime waranty FTW.

I just called Autozone and they said they don't carry them. Neither does Advanced, O'Reilly, or NAPA. :\

I also called the dealer who quoted it at $422, but they wouldn't give me a part number...
