Tranny fluid changed, now reverse not engaging
2004 zts 2.3L. We are around 93k miles and had a shop change the tranny fluid, they dropped pan, cleaned magnet, put in new filter/gasket yesterday.

Driving it all yesterday was fine, shifting was noticeably smoother, however this morning when I put it into reverse it didn't engage, it was like it was still in neutral. When I gave it some gas it just sat and rev'd up an additional 500 rpms or so then would kinda engage and stutter back, very jerky, like in a manual when you're letting the clutch out to soon or don't have enough gas.

All other gears seem ok, though shifting wasn't as smooth as yesterday it seemed. What can cause the reverse to not engage properly? What with the tranny fluid change could trigger this? I did some quick searches and found 3 possibilities if anyone can shed some light, bad oil pump, solenoid, intermediate band.

You could add TRS (Transmission Range Sensor) to your list. Check the ATX fluid level.

To be honest, if it worked properly prior to the servicing, I'd simply return it to the shop and tell them to fix it.

Definitely take it back to the shop that had the transmission open for service immediately prior to the onset of symptoms.

I doubt it is the pump, that would affect all gears not just Reverse.

The reverse clutch could be not engaging.
when in R, the R clutches and low-1st clutches are engaged.
That is the only time the R clutches are engaged, the low-1st clutches also get engaged if in Manual-1st gear.
So, if the trans seems OK with the gearshift in manual 1st, I would think the reverse clutch is not engaging for some reason.

I took it to a-affordable transmission in colorado.

After a 20 min drive to the parents i stopped on the street and reverse engaged fine. I need to see if manual 1st doesnt engage when reverse isnt working.

I called the shop and they said the viscocity change could have clogged a valve or something, and to drive it for a week and if it still does it then bring it in.

Ok. If you said Jiffy Lube or a place like that I was going to give you a internet punch in the face. lol. You would be SOL if that was the case. Sounds like the shop will make it right for you. Good luck [thumb]

As someone else higher up said, recheck fluid level, that alone could cause it.

I do not know necessarily on this trans but if hydraulics like many others, reverse requires more pressure than other clutch packs, often reverse acting up alone is a sign of pressure problem (even pump) that then extends to other gears shortly. Seen it on many different models. That's why you evaluate the 'going into reverse' bump when bringing a new ATX of any brand back to life.

If I took it to Jiffy Lube I'd have to punch myself in the face, hah.

So after that day of no reverse engaging it has engaged fine. But wife just called me, she was driving and said when she slowed down it would jerk forward, and when she pressed on gas to accelerate it would hesitate and jerk then go, the way she described it sounded like issues with the transmission changing gears. And she did mention it kicked her out of O/D.

I had her park and turn off the car. Turn it back on, and then she said it was ok...

That lend any more insight into what's going on?

Going to check fluid as soon as I get off of work, I called transmission place and told them what happened and that I'm taking it back in. He said he'd look at it but it wouldn't be from anything from their service... to which I responded all was good before service, we'll see.

How bad is overfill? And is this cause for concern?

One side shows just over max, and the other side a bit higher than that, consistently. Checked with car running.
