Popping noise

I keep on hearing some sort of popping noise when I turn the wheel. It's scaring me because I don't know what the problem is. Can someone please help me out?

Check your front sway bar end links. They require periodic replacement and cause the noise you describe as they wear out. It's a fairly common problem. They're very easy to replace and reasonably inexpensive (Duralast from Autozone are about 25.00 a pair and decent quality). The other possibilities (also known problem areas) are a broken spring (some early foci had spring quality issues) or a worn out strut mount bearing.

Crap... I forgot to mention that the problem is on my 2002 Ford Focus ZTS.

No worries :P we will still answer your question! I'd go with the sway bar end links. That's usually the issue. Your springs are most likely fine. How many miles are on the car? And do you know if the end links have ever been replaced?

roughly 90K.

Don't know about the end links being replaced... I got the car as is last year.

I'll check them out.

It was definitely the struts. When my dad and I replaced the front struts, it stopped making the popping noise...

ps... Sorry about the very long delay on this reply. I've been dealing with too many and couldn't focus on my car. Now I'm back at getting it fixed :)

Did you talk to ford before you did it? They did a recall on the springs and they would have been replaced for free.

Didn't know it was a recall... Thought it was a warranty thing.

Nevin W 01-28-2013 04:47 PM

Warranty/Recall. It was extended to 10 years after the car was made. Mine snapped in February of last year and I did it without knowing about the recall. I am now in he process of Ford refunding my money to me for he repair.
