Knocking/tapping sound from engine bay?

I've got a '00 zetec atx. So, the other day I started to hear a knocking/tapping sound when I accelerate. It's hard to pinpoint the sound, but it's a steady sound from the engine bay. I can also feel the knocking very well through the gas pedal. Now, It only happens when I accelerate; the second I lift off the gas pedal, the sound stops. Even if I'm cruising at freeway speeds but I'm not accelerating, no noise. Any idears?

Check engine light on? Low on oil?

Really just got to get under the hood and rev it up while you listen to where its coming from. Hard to say without hearing it.

Oil is full up, no engine light. It makes no noise if stationary and rev'ing- it only starts when in drive and accelerating, so I can't listen/look in the engine bay.

So it knocks while the engine is under load? Does it knock while turning or striaght line acceleration?

It'll make the sound a bit when accelerating during a turn as well as whilst going straight. The sound is harder to catch, though, since the acceleration during a turn is much less dramatic.
