timing problems?

hey guys i just rebuilt an 01 2.0 zetec motor and it seems like i cant get it in time. The vct exhaust cam would turn a little and not line back up once rotated a couple times. I have adjusted the belt to where everything lines back up when rotated and still wont start. any ideas?[wiggle] Doing this with the notch in balancer lined up and cams locked

Need to check everything with the #1 piston at TDC then see how things look , have you done a compression test

I sell the VCT Elim so you can install 2 adj cam gears

I think maybe it was the shitty grounds, added a body ground and the car started once idled up and shut off and doesnt want to start back up but maybe its just a weak battery. Its a cheap car i got for 500 that had been overheated from a coolant leak i just pulled it apart to make sure there wasnt any damage and put new rings, gaskets. So if everythings lined up after a couple rotations then it should be in time? or does the exhaust cam hub need to be a certain way?

so i guess the exhaust gear needs to be tensioned to the right at tdc since ii retards timing?? this is an escort zx2

or does it use oil pressure to stay advanced? sounded normal for the first second till that cam locked?

how much is the delete kit? should run fine just throw a code?

Yes. The exhaust cam will vary as you turn the motor around, the springs make it drop back sometimes.

Motor times like a normal zetec except the exhaust cam must be rotated clockwise to hit the internal stop in the sprocket at timing time.

sounded like it wanted to start for a second. This is with it timed against the internal stop in vct, im gonna try a couple other ways see what i come up with. If i cant get it guess ill get the tdc pin make sure im doing this right

got it started up and running but runs kinda like its off a tooth somewhere just a slight hesitation on accelaration, guess i need the tdc tool

How were you finding and holding TDC before without the pin to stop the crank? That's the sure fire way to do it, with that and the bar to lock the cams in place, which it sounds like you have. The VCT needs to be rotated fully towards the front of the car, which is basically it's at rest position as far as I can tell so I don't know why this gives people problems. Just find and stop the crank at TDC, lock the cams, and then rotate the VCT through it's range of movement for shits and giggles, and get it fully rotated back towards you before putting the belt on.

Everything lines up tdc with marks but it throws a p0340 code.
Also sounds like you can hear the vct hub kinda rattling as its running like its not correct,
Guess i need to pull the vct hub off an "reset" it accordingly

ran out of daylight ill tinker with it in the morning seems like its almost there. Im just lining up the marks on balancer and using a file that fit snug to lock the cams. I tried it with the hub forward but think maybe i was off one tooth on intake and exhaust which tried to start but didnt. Got the intake lined up and tried with hub in reverse position, the car runs but just alittle hesitant accelerating with some noise from the vct area it sounds like. Going to put the hub back in the forward position tomorrow and see what i come up with. Will probably pick up the timing tool kit
thanks for the help guys, seems to be alot of conflicting info in searchs

well she seems to be running smooth and the timing code went away. Its back to how i originally timed it just the bad grounds that mysteriously popped up had me chasing tail. Clackity noise went away as well. Only thing is it looks like the intake cam is advanced 1 tooth but the car wouldnt even fire with it on what appeared to be tdc. Thanks for the helps guys
