weird rpms / idle hanging? Is this normal?
My car feels weird. I just bought used it and its my first focus zx3
I've been reading and some people say this is normal but I decided to post a video just in case http://youtu.be/541eya3QYqc <iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/541eya3QYqc" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> So, the car is already warm, I start it and rev's up and down fine until 1200 rpms and then seems to hang for a WHILE before getting back to 800 rpms. Also when driving I let off the throttle for lets say 10 seconds, then when I press the cluth to shift down the engine REVs up about 200-400 rpms on its own. Also when driving when I let off the throttle to slow down (on gear but without breaking ) the engine seems to hang at 2000 rpms for a LONG time Are these things normal? if not any ideas of what could be wrong? When I bought it (already felt like this) I cleaned the throttle body, run some seafoam, and tried finding vacuum leaks without luck. Thanks! |
It's normal. Mine does it too. I believe I read it was part of the emissions. There was another post on here a while back on this.

Thanks a lot, that makes me feel a lot more confident in my car.
Do you know if there is ways of making it not do that? I read somewhere (for mustangs) that you can make a restrictor plate or something. |
That I'm not sure of. It would be nice to stop it. It is extremely annoying. Especially with a louder exhaust. You can really hear it hang there pulling up to stops.
I haven't had time to dig into it much other than searching on here for answers. |
haven't done it to mine, but I have heard the computer can be programmed to not do this.

^ that's what I was wondering too, maybe a tune can stop that.
I'm waiting on a tune till I get a header and better exhaust. |
Tune can get rid of it, and it IS annoying, especially if you're used to using engine braking as much as possible as a habit. The "wait" before it starts idling down after you take your foot off is a pain - by the time it starts to slow down you're ready to grab another lower gear & go through the wait again - since once you touch the gas to rev. match the waiting period starts again...
In "regular" shifting, once I got a tach. installed, I found I had to get off the gas early when shifting to avoid the "bump" in rpm after clutching... And yeah, it's supposed to be an "emissions" feature from what I've heard. |
I'm going to try finding more info on this (check link)
http://www.lemans62.org.uk/Newslette...20Addendum.pdf People seem to use it a lot on mustangs. They seem to be really easy to make or cheap to buy. I bought this car as a daily driver and I promised my wife I will behave and not play with it too much cause I already have a few toys :D So tuning could be fun but then to make it worth messing with it a cold intake and exhaust before the tune would be kind of a good idea.. and then maybe nicer suspension and a rear disc brake conversion and there I go again... wifey will want to kill me and start bugging haha |
^^
Interesting...can that be used on a SVT? Stromberg2 |
yeah, I just found them on ebay. and I got the instructions of how to make them too. Supposedly they dont throw any CEL's or hurts the car in anyway. Might be worth trying
