Always keep your headlights on automatic...

because your dash is illuminated all the time whether your headlights are on or not.

I have the auto lamp feature and used it for about a week then decided to leave them on manual ...I prefere them to be on when I want them on and off when I want them off. I also use the fogs as drl's sometimes and those have to be set manually.

I know what u mean though on well lit streets it can be easy to drive away with the lights off which is not good.

I like the idea of turning my headlights on and off as I need them, so sometimes I'll set them to the 'off' position. Then, like you said, I drive off at night in the city and my headlights are off and I'm none the wiser because my dash is fully lit up.

I do not want the car to decide stuff like that. I turn my lights on when "I" want them on.

I leave mine on auto and have had no issues.

The only thing that's a bit of a nuisance is the way the NAV screens toggles from daylight mode to nighttime mode -- at dusk it can toggle between the two several times before settling on nighttime mode. They need to learn the concept of hysteresis...

The car on the screen will illuminate its headlights when they are on.

I drive with my parking and fog lights on.

I'm in Canada where the Focus comes with daytime running lights, so I can't ever actually turn the headlights off even if I turn the dial to off. They're always on. Hate that.

Would love DRL's.

The auto-headlight functionality is lovely in theory. On this car, in practice, they suck.

I'm in the habit of leaving the switch on auto, but I usually end up switching them on manually due to the poor sensitivity of the system. So, basically I use the "auto" position as "off". This reduces the possibility of me driving off into the night on well-lit streets without the headlights on.
