How many miles can you go after you fuel light comes on?
I have been going about 30 miles but just seeing what you guys have been doing. I am talking about high way miles.
Thanks |
2.3L 17 in my Automatic Fossil fuel killer and 32 in my 2.0L manual sipper...
Never had mine below 1/4 tank
Wasn't this the premise of an episode of Seinfeld?
on my 05 when the light comes on,I have about three gallons left, but having run out before,I get gas as soon as possible if I ran it so long that the light comes on.
For the Focus, when it gets that low I PLAN on only having 1 gal. of "useable" fuel, and really haven't bothered to push it to see EXACTLY how far I could go.
Done that before by carrying a 5 gal. can to fire one up again when it dies just to see what is ACTUALLY useable, but it is a LOT of work to plan that experiment so you don't get stuck in a bad place when it dies.... Fuel injection has the annoying habit of dying COMPLETELY when it runs out, and needing quite a bit of fuel & time to get running again. totally unlike a carbureted vehicle that you can always get a LITTLE more out of when it "sputters.. (grin) |
Runnig low on fuel in focus is a bad idea in general, because the fuel pump can die from overheat.
Bad idea to push it although I'd say it's safe to plan on 25-30 miles before it sputters onto the side of the road, completely out of gas.
I would defiantly not encourage anyone here to try and experiment this idea, on the Focus, nor any car for that matter. It is not good for any part of the fuel system, by running it far out of gas you can.
