custom airbox/heat shield for 2012 steeda SRI
I am planning on trying to build a custom airbox/ heat shield for the Steeda Short Ram intake for the 2012. It is somewhat similar to their cold air intake but uses all of the stock inlets and allows for a cold air pipe from the front bumper area, similar to the mod that newmission did. I am looking for some feedback and see if there are any flaws in my design. The airbox will be built from 1/8th inch aluminum sheet bent into the proper shape.
Front panel mod:
Taking what newmission did with drilling holes in the front plastic triangle and making full slots across with the exception of where the punchouts are. I will then hot glue a piece of screen door screen to the backside, this will help keeps bugs and rocks from getting sucked up.
I will hot glue a funnel that is cut to the right size to the first piece of intake pipe and wrap the edge with duct tape so that no air can escape out and to protect the glue from weather. The first piece of pipe will a 45 degree mandrel bent pipe 2.5” inside diameter, and will be hose clamped to a 1 foot long straight pipe and will run into the airbox.
The airbox will be four sided liked the CAI that Steeda has, and have a 2 sided cover. The estimated dimensions are six inches wide, six inches long and 7 inches tall. The bottom piece will be an extra half inch long on the open right side to make the connection piece to the chassis shorter. That piece will screw in below the grounding wire, in the same spot that the steeda design uses.
The bottom side will have a hole for the 2.5” pipe along the top edge so that the pipe can be anchored in the box with a hose clamp that is screwed into the box. It will also have a screw hole to screw the stock steeda SRI mount to.
The front side will have a hole for the modified second stock inlet and will have a bracket that runs to the chassis to attach below that hose.
The left side will have a hole on the bottom edge for the primary stock intake with the hole for the velocity stack right above it, this is basically the same design that steeda uses and the velocity stack will be screwed into the aluminum like the steeda design. Next to that hole will be another bracket like the steeda has for a 3rd mount point to the chassis.
Stock air inlet mod:
The stock air inlets have two inlet hoses. The first one will be the same as the steeda design. The second inlet the steeda design just plugs it, probably due to the odd shape, the hole on the chassis side is round and I will take some hose and screw it into the housing to allow a round shape into the airbox. This should allow for three separate inlets to the airbox and higher and colder airflow.
The top cover:
The top cover will be an L shape piece of aluminum that will use two screws on the left side to hold it in place. The top will be covered with some foam that will prevent rubbing against the hood.

So the design has changed somewhat, but still should have the same outcome.
Hey josh hate to revive an old thread but did this ever happen?
My intake air temps are only bad under WOT and in city driving 10-14 degrees over ambient, cruising is 1-6 degrees. In general 10 degrees is 1 HP, so not losing much power currently, but would like to get heatsoak down slightly.
See I'm kinda wanting to do a little bit of a K&N type housing myself, just need to measure it all out, might go find some cardboard and do it today to get ready to find metal
