Adding fog lights on prewired chassis
 

I am new to this forum and will take advantage of my first post to submit a tutorial. I was looking for it to no avail and thus am posting it here so that people can see what it takes to do this job when you have a pre-wired car.

This is a 2000 Focus ZTS.
It has the harnesses for fog lights behind where they are supposed to be in a fog lights-equipped focus.
I went to the junkyard and found 20+ cars to pick parts from.
What I got (and is needed to make it work):

-Fog lights and their fasteners and bulbs
-Fog light center grill (shorter than the non fog lights grill)
-"Fog light option" Headlight switch (the knob can be pulled to actuate the fog lights as needed)
-1 relay

The whole thing cost me about $30 from that same junkyard.

First I removed the factory grill, then installed the fog lights in their alcoves, the bumper has areas that are pre molded for installation. Then I installed the center grill.
I hooked up both of the harnesses to the fog light assemblies.
Then I added one of those black relays on slot R13 in the main relay box under the hood:

Then I opened up the dash around the factory headlight switch to the left side of the steering wheel, checked that the factory headlight harness had that thick black and green wire at pin 83b (to see it click taht link and scroll down to post#10 to the picture of the harness: http://www.focusfanatics.com/forum/showthread.php?t=229873 ), it did so I hooked up the harness to my new "fog light" headlight switch and bolted the switch back to the dash, then bolted the dash back together:

This is my result, first pic, one fog light was not working, I ended up wiggling the fog light harness a bit on that non working side and it worked [wrenchin] [headbang][headbang][headbang] (second pic):

Could I do the same on my 07?

Thanks so much for posting this. I wanted to do this to my daughter's '03, but wasn't sure how much wiring was already present. Great write-up and excellent picture documentation.

What was the biggest PITA doing this and can you tell us the degree of difficulty (0 - 10), if you haven't already?

Considering the fact that you do not need to modify or customize anything , nor do you need any special tools:
The difficulty of the project: 1/10

And for an 07 I have no idea but you could start by checking if you have fog light harnesses behind the lower part of your bumper where a fog light equipped 07 focus would have them.
If you have them It probably means the car is prewired for them, you would just need the fog lights and grill, most likely a "fog light" headlight switch for the dash and the main relay box will also most likely look the same as this 2000 does or almost, so just put your relay in the fog light spot for it. Good designs do not get changed often and my relay box looks good, I would not be surprised that yours is very similar, if not the same, even while being the next model year. I got under my car today and quickly looked around but didn't see any unused harnesses on either side. This might be a dumb question but were the foglight harnesses obvious or were they kind of hidden or tucked away up in the plastic?

Well dude, on my car they were very obvious. I think you are going to have to do a custom job on that one. There is a post in the archives but start by getting a headlight switch and the fog lights, then you will probably have to use a custom relay and fuse harness (that wou will be making) that is connected to that headlight switch.

Found the female pigtails for the fog / driving lights while under the car yesterday for the first time. So the wiring is definitely there. Also noticed the black plastic apron (acts like an air dam) between the bumper cover and the bottom of the rad cradle is completely disconnected. Bolts fell out due to rust, and hitting those cement bumpers in parking lots I think. Will likely have to open the holes up to accept 5/16 or 3/8 " SAE fasteners. The clips that join the apron to the bottom side of the bumper cover are broken too. Will figure out a solution for that.
