Dropped valve seat - what's it look like?
 
As promised, part 2 of my dropped valve seat thread.

Finally got my head pulled off today. really not that bad, like 10 minutes during conversation. Easy to do when it's on a stand though.

First, the piston..... #4 if you will notice. Also notice how the cylinder wall is NOT horribly scratched; it's enough to catch on your fingernail, but not bad enough that I can't hone it and fix the problem. Piston will need to be replaced along with the rings.

Now why don't we take a moment and see what the other cylinders look like? WAIT, what's that? ah... metal chips, small amounts, have made their way into other cylinders. No damage though.

On to the cylinder head, chamber #4..... take a look at the damage. This is certainly not repairable. Also note how recessed the intake (larger) valve is. Obviously missing a seat which has been ground up into tiny little pieces.

And a look at the head as a whole, shows us where most of the seat ended up... quite the distance away from #4!

And one final image, this helps me explain as to WHY you need to clean out your intake manifold before installing the new head if you choose to do so. METAL SHAVINGS.
(I also had a pool of oil in the bottom of my intake. Honestly not sure why)

What I plan on doing with this engine is to rebuild it next year and sell it for less that what they go for here (around $1200! freshly pulled from a car) but still make maybe 5-600 out of it. Alabama Cylinder Head was recommended to me by my instructor who used them quite a bit to fix this "common" problem at his shop.

On that note, this is also the most common damage a valve seat does to these engines (unless it blows a hole in the block like some have done).

Bottom line, it's a fairly easy fix. New cylinder head ready to install, new piston and new rings. Not TOO bad.

Feel free to ask what you may, I should hopefully have an answer.

How long was it run after the seat dropped?

Ah good question... It had been started and run several times. I'd say consecutively it ran for maybe around 6-7 minutes.

theres just a certain few members who have like 100 posts and 50 of them are saying how crappy the spi is. you know me over anyone loves my little mini hemi
