Best Focus version to start with?

I am seriously considering a used Focus to be used as a daily driver but eventually want to road race/rally modify. Is there a certain year or options that are better versions than others? Should i go the for a Zetec or Duratec engine option?

Well, which would you prefer?

Road Race = Sedan

Rally = Hatch

For the hatch 03-04 with a 2.3l Duratec

For the Sedan 05-06 ST Sedan also with a 2.3l Duratec

If you're not sure which you'd rather do or you'd like the cheaper of the two find the hatch and call it a day.

Do you know the size of the can of worms you've just opened? No doubt going to become a duratec vs zetec thread. Me, I say duratec, bc I have one as my DD and love it. Responds fabulously to bolt-ons. But zetec has boost potential. Pick your poison!

I don't think there's really a choice. Duratec has more displacement, is proven on a road course, and has more upward potential for power with the addition of boost.

I would probably agree with Nickgt40 except that I absolutely love my Zetec. As far a proven numbers go the 2.3 has the win.

What about transmission/driveline and suspension changes throughout the years? Are there any years that are more preferable or have less problems than others? It seems like there are more parts and more and things that can be done for earlier Focuses, but that may be from them being around longer.

Transmission is essentially the same for each motor, they both use the MTX-75.

The 00-07 have identical underpinnings, the frame construction on the 08-11 foci are structually a little bit stronger but they don't offer the 2.3l motor. And I think those cars may be slightly heavier as well, but I'm not 100% on that.

There is a slight variation in the shock size for the 06-11 foci, but that's the only change that I'm aware of other than stock sway bar sizes. That can easily be changed and probably would for road racing or rally anyways, so that's not much of a concern.

The interior between the 00-04 and 05+ is different, but that's a mute point with a gutted car as well. Happy modding [thumb]

As far as a good daily driver and fun weekend car, I would go with a hatch. If you could find an 04 with the 2.3 that would be a very good find.

Since the 2.3's are a not the most readily available version, and it seems like most of the parts for the 2.3 can be used on the 2.0 Duratec, the 2L Duratec cars seem like a better option.
