how do i get into autocrossing?

ever since i picked up the fofo i have had the angel on one shoulder saying to drive slow, safe, and cautiously... and the devil on the other saying to take that 25 mph curve at 50 because i can.

or was it the other way around. but to avoid the trouble i could get into on public roads, i really want to try autocross so i can have fun with my car in a safer environment... and hopefully learn a thing or two that might save my life some day.

but where do i start? What clubs are there, which are the best, and how do i join? what is the time of year people do performance driving?

To help you answer these questions... I'm in the area of Joliet, IL- the autobahn is maybe 15 minutes from my house. I am real busy lately but I might be able to schedule a weekend off my 2 jobs ahead of time to go to a race... unless i already missed the whole season...

yeah i really have no clue how this works [confused]

Look up SCCA Solo in your area.

You can either sign up online or find out where your local runnings are at.

IF you show up in person ... SHOW UP EARLY ...

It takes time to sign in and get all of your things together. Also make sure you have at least 65 bucks in cash **Different per region ... ** but 65 would cover any body.

You need to also have a SNELL 2005 Approved Helmet or better ... or is it SNELL 95 ... I don't remember ... Just get a SNELL 2005 and you will be fine. If you don't know how to check that ... when looking at helmets you just look inside and find the Stamp or really stuck on sticker of the Snell approval on the inside of the helmet. It will say what number after snell.

Once you are in ... there is lots that you will learn from those out there. Meet and greet with some of the instructors and other drivers ... and soon you will be in with the running.

Looked it up for you ... There is an autoX link ... just follow and catch the times.

**Edit** And there is more than just AutoX on the link ... so if you are looking for a track run ... it's on there also.

no not really , maybe ST (street touring)
hell, I'm in street mod. chasing beemers & STI's..lol

^that's because you got cams/header/no interior/ and your a psycho behind the wheel, lol.

I'd say ST, but seeing your engine mods in your sig might bump you out to FSP or even SM. Take a look at the downloadable rule book on www.scca.com. there's also a quicklook guide in the stickied threads. It's a little out of date but it will give you a good idea.

OP- also a good idea to check out www.scca.com, there should be a link to find your region as well as checking out the rule book.

Biggest piece of advice, show up early and ask questions. The Tech inspector can help you class your car, if needed, and walk the course with somebody who can show you how to visualize the course. In most cases they will have a more experienced person sit shotgun for your first run or two. once again, Ask Questions. The majority of people at these things are more than willing to help new people out. and don't worry about hitting a cone or two, some of our more experienced guys have taken out more than 10 in a run (tho we wanted to kill him after picking them all up, lol). And the most important thing, have fun!
