clunk/pop noise in front suspension
 
In the past few weeks I have replaced the sway bar end link kits, the passenger side motor mount(had to change the idler pulley, found a bad mount) the lower torque mount and the trans. mount. Yesterday I started driving my 50 mile commute, when I started hearing this clunking noise anytime the car would hit a bump, or an uneven road surface in the highway. Took the car straight to the shop, and we first determined that it was the LH strut and strut mount. Purchased one new Monroe Sensa Trac strut and strut mount, and it seemed that it had taken care of the problem. This morning the noise returned after going over some bumps on the way to work. It happens at low speeds and at highway speeds some times. Anybody has an idea what else could be wrong? Thanks in advance!!! [???:)]

I was going to say the sway bar end links but I see you've already replaced them. The only other thing that I can think of that clunks while driving would be a worn out ball joint. Check for play by using a pry bar in between the control arm and hub.

I forgot to mention, she has 81K miles, the last 25K have been driven mostly in the highway. I don't know if the mileage has to do with the wear of the ball joints.

I've read that the strut bearings are a source of 'clunking', as well. I have 102k miles and am about to find out....replacing struts and mount/bearings in the next couple of weeks.

As a rule of thumb, if your steering is still 'tight', the ball joints are probably still good.

My driver's side front bearing has gone out and it is definately a clucking/popping sound. Esp. when turning and going over a rough road.

I would say the tie rod ends would have a much larger effect on steering than the ball joint would. My steering still felt like new but was clunking like crazy because of a severely worn ball joint.

Thanks for the help guys. I took the car to a different mechanic, actually a suspension and alignment shop that I had dealt in the past before, and he(new mechanic) was able to find the problem: A loose sway bar link kit!!!!!!!!!! Once they rolled the car to the ramp, he heard the noise. He checked ball joints for play and steering and immediately saw the loose link kit. A new lock nut and 15 dollars later I was on the road again!!!

Im just under 36k on my 2010 and have clunking popping noise in both my rear and front. Im pretty sure its all suspension noise. I'm taking it in soon so I'll report what happens.
