ok,
I have been talking to a few of you about possibly getting an SVT here shortly. Well, as some of you know, I am a modder from the Kia side of the house from a while back. So, I am looking at possibly getting another Spectra5 (which is what I had before) or, get the SVT.

I was hoping that those with some knowledge, could help give me some good points and bad for both vehicles. I know pretty much all I need to know about the Kia as, I got up on most of the specifics when I had it and I belonged to a modder club as well. So, things I'm interested in is, horse power, handling, after market mod parts, exhaust options, stuff like that. I got all the stuff nailed down for the Kia from this web site here

With all that the SVT already has done to it, what other stuff would I need to look into getting done that would benefit the vehicle while keeping it street drivable also?

anyway, any help in making this decision would be great..

well as far as the svt goes. if you want to drag race then i dont suggest it. as far as autocross, eibach springs and crossdrilled rotors will be a good upgrade for handleing. do an exhaust, ORP/highflow cat, intake and better lower torque mount. add a tune from tom and i believe you would be most impressed with the results. the tranny is not the greatest for drag with such long ratio's, but on a autocross cross can run it mostly in 2nd. around 30mph to 70mph in 2nd.

handling? SVT all the way. it will leave the kia in its dust. drag racing... might be close. i dont know much about kias. never have seen a fast one. i vote the focus but then again im biased

ok, just to clarify things a bit.. I'm not looking to drag race this thing... I'm just lookin to get the best performance I can out of what I got. that doesn't mean that I wanna take the car and race it on a course or drag race it or take it drifting.. I do like to go fast though.. so, when I get the "urge" I would like to have the means to feed my hunger,.. [;)] nothing more...

If you're looking at just general performance, you'd have a good start with an SVT. For general upgrades I'd go with:

Rear lower "dogbone" mount
STS
Shifter counterweight delete
(these three by themselves will definitely "wake-up" the shifting)

Suspension upgrades are sometimes application specific, but a good upgrade to the basic SVT suspension is the Eibach sway bar kit (front and rear), along with poly bushings and new endlinks. If you want to take a step up, but not too radical, talk to Mike @ Hilbish about the Ford Racing kit. It's a big step for a ZX3, but not a lot more for an SVT.

Front and rear strut braces will also help suspension-wise, but as someone who doesn't have them, I'll let others speak to their effectiveness and handling quality.

Cross-drilled rotors are great for autocrossing, but personally some good aftermarket solid rotors are fine for all-around driving. Some good options there are Centric and Brembo. If you're upgrading the rotors, it's a good idea to upgrade the pads as well. Some options out there are EBC, Hawk, and Mintex. I'd read up in the Suspension/Braking forum to get more input into the variances between them.

The stock exhaust is nice, but like most of us, you'll probably want to ditch it for an aftermarket one pretty early on. The most common versions are Borla and Magnaflow, although some guys run the HKS and MBRP with good results as well. The performance gains are relatively close across the board, so it comes down mostly to a personal preference of sound.

An Off-road pipe does give you a little HP gain over the SVT cat, but being in NC, you'll have problems with inspections without the cat.

Probably one of the best bang-for-the-buck items is a chip tune. There are some good tunes out there that will maximize the performance of your SVT without the need for a lot of add-ons. The ones I'd say are the most favored are the Predator tune and Tom's tune.

You can go with a cold air intake if you want, but I've heard that the SVT stock airbox flows pretty well as it is, so long as you use a good panel filter like a K&N.


That's just some basic stuff, mind you. If you wish to go more radical with performance there are many other options which will be specific to your performance ideals. Personally, I think you'll be much happier with an SVT. [thumb]

This is kind of an ironic post for me......reason being is my best friend has an 06 Spec5 and I have a ZX3. Now granted my ZX3 isn't a SVT and Im not sure how they stack up versus a Spec5 but I will tell you this, my ZX3 has alot of bolt on mods in the engine bay along with a brand new 6 puck racing clutch and lightweight flywheel, ford racing sport springs and some low pro tires, and from 0 - 90 we are dead even in a drag race, from 90 on, it's like I slammed the brakes on cause he walks the dog with me. Now onto a little country road driving, I can't stay in sight of his Spec5....honest to God! When I lived in Kentucky I just lived about 3 houses down from him and we both knew the roads like the back of our hands so there was no advantage there. Now your prolly asking yourself, what all does he have done to his car.....right........He is sitting at stock height, rolling some 17's ( same as me ) and a 40 series tire vs my 45. Motor wise, he is running a full CAI and NGK plugs and wires........THATS ALL!!!!!

Honestly though, if it were me, I would go SVT all the way. Reason being is, Ford somewhat supports a performance side to their cars and trucks......KIA on the other hand not so much. Don't get me wrong though, you can get things ( KFX ) for the Spec5 but your bank book will wonder what the hell happened not to mention normally there is a crazy wait after you order your part, they say it's cause everything has to come from Korea.

HOLY CRAP!!! i remember spanking the hell out of that kia on 321 a few months back. i swear it has to be the same one. ask him if he remembers an obnoxiosly loud red zx3 on 18s running off on him back around november. show him the pic on my profile. and take a picture too because i want to see the look on his face when you tell him that my car is nearly stock.(im not even close to stock but i want to see face) he dropped a gear on me at about 60 and i was doing 120+ before he even broke 80 i bet

Thanks dpr3z for posting that. Looks really nice as far as Kias go. Makes remember mine when I had it. but, I hear ya about the KFX thing. There have been several peeps on the site I belong to that have expressed that they were upset because they had to wait so dam long to get there parts and KFX has not been known for there "personality" soo.... [dunno]

I know there are a lot more parts available for the SVT's right now than there are for the Kias... but still.. I did already have one...
