Resistor pack in switch

Its sounds like it is the blower resister, if your car has one. I know Mazda trucks were notorious for this same type of issue in the late 80's and early 90's. I would call your local dealer parts dept. and ask them to look this part up for you (I am almost certain that this will be a dealer item only probably $25-$50), and if your car does have a blower resister ask your parts guy if he has seen this issue before.

replace resistor, better safe than sorry, last time I looked it was like $8. I have not seen this problem so much with the focus's, more with escorts and contours, but I'm sure ford hasn't changed the design too much. I know with the contours they actually had a problem with the wiring and had a recall on both. but no such luck with the focus. but when you change the resistor check the wire to it and make sure the connector isn't melted.
