power steering issues...

I tried at FJ with no response yet so I figured I would try here as well...any technicians PLEASE respond!

hey everyone...I've been having a couple intermittent problems requarding my power steering as of late...its happened a few times now.

07 zx3 mtx, every now and then when I give it what its got in first gear and have steering input at the same time I'll go for the 2nd gear shift and all of a sudden it sounds and feels like the power steering has more or less failed on me...(the whirring noise and tougher steering) so I'll stop to check the fluid, which is at the correct level, and once the cap is removed I notice the fluid is very aerated not sure if this is normal. then it will drive normally once restarted.

I guess my question is could I be shocking and revving the power steering pump so fast that it is cavitating and causing a vapor lock? when it first happened I instantly made an appointment with my local dealer to have it checked out but upon later driving noticed the problem had gone away...very strange!

any suggestions/ideas guys?

make sure your fluid is full

mine was low and i topped it off and that solved it

yes that was the first thing I checked, fluid level was right where it was supposed to be...I'm a harley tech so I know most things about motors and what not...but certainly not all. just wondering if anyone has had a similar situation or anything at all.

my 07 lg zx3 went to ford cuz i had same issues, and they found my pump was bad and the reservoir was leaking and all the oil was black, they replaced it at 14k, it was happening on and off since like 5k and like you said if i turned car off and gave it a few minutes itd be fine, and now at 15k its noisy sometimes...im kinda irked cuz its only been 1k miles and ive driven it pretty easy, they get to look at it again tuesday

Top off the power steering res. Mine did the same thing and I checked and it was in the normal range but would still do it. So I filled it up just incase and it stopped and hasn't come back since.

^im gonna have to try that

I don't think I can top it off anymore than it already is...I haven't had to add anything to it personally..there are no leaks to the system. I think I'm just gonna call it a nonissue for now and drive it a little easier I suppose.

Did you fill it all the way to the top?

look at the return hose on the front of the pump. I can almost guarantee you that there is fluid soaked around it.

Here is part of a tsb out for your symptom, it says its eligible to be covered under new vehicle limited warranty coverage

Some 2006 and 2007 Focus vehicles built on or after 10/3/2005 may experience a customer concern of the Power Steering (P/S) system leaking and/or system noisy. This may be due to a damaged O-ring seal at the P/S reservoir-to-pump body causing a low fluid level or fluid aeration.

Hope this helps
