What Ra finish is on the Zetec head??

I got my head shaved and need to know what Ra finish is needed on the Zetec head (it's a ford racing head). I already got it shaved but i don't think they put the right finish on it being that i strait edged it and replaced the gasket twice and it still leaks coolant. thanks for the info

I didn't know it has to be finished, they usually just plane it and leave it I believe because they are aluminum which don't need to be coated with anything on the shaved side???

I plan on shaving .020 off my zetec head and was wondering how I can get a good finish (I'm a machinist but a lathe guy, 2yrs experience, I don't do much milling, let alone on aluminum). I brought the head into the shop and my supervisor said he thought it looks like about a 30Ra- which is pretty damn good for a mill, but then it didn't look ground- you could see machining marks. AND you could tell the whole thing was done in one pass. (It would take at least a 7" diameter shell mill to do that, which we don't have.

But I'm afraid of doing it myself since I'll have 1 or 2 chances (passes with the cutter) to get it right. If I don't think I can get that kind of finish then I'll have to pay some engine shop to do it.

So my questions are how can I get a good finish on this head?
And if I use a small cutter, can I take 2 passes and not worry about the finish on the overlap?

Hope some machinists can chime in on this one.

Got any pictures of the surface

Yes I do. How do I send them to you, Tom?

Sign up for a photo hosting site like photobucket and then link/upload the photos on the forum. That way we can all see.

I'd have to look in my FSM but IIRC, 28ra is spec.

To mill the surface you're looking at a big cutting wheel --> http://www.hillsidemachineinc.com/Di...surfacing.html

If you don't have one it doesn't pay to try and make something work or buy one (no cheap as you well know). Just bring it to someone who can cut it down, cheap to do.

So its probably not a good idea to use a small cutter head and do it in two passes?

28Ra is pretty smooth. Might have to take it somwhere to get it done.

I wouldn't.
Thing is though, you can as a trial and then make a decision. Just skim the head and see what it turns out like. Basically no harm no foul. Just keep track of starting deck height so you can keep track of what to machine to.
Keep the feed speed low for a better finish and plenty of coolant.

I have an old head I could practice on...

But the whole thing about waiting for an open machine to set it up on then having to have someone help me do it bc I'm not a mill guy is not very feasible.

I think I'll just find an engine shop to do it. At least they have the bigger cutters too

Thanks iminhell though for your input
