Looking for new tires for autocross

**I put this here since it was the autocross forum and my question pertains specifically to tires used for such. If a mod feels this would be better suited in the wheels/tires/brakes forum please move it.[;)] **

Well I've officially worn out the BFG KDW 2's that I've been running since April And I'm in the market for a new set of tires. The two that I've been looking at are the Falken Azenis RT-615's, and the Bridgestone Potenza RE-01R's.

Anybody have experience with either of these tires? Got any opinions on them. Looking for good and bad here, I need to purchase new tires by this Friday/Saturday to have them broken in for the next event.

If you have any suggestions for other tires that you've had great results with, post them up. I'm open to ideas[:D]

Also don't bother suggesting r-compounds. I'm getting a set this winter with a set of dedicated race wheels. 2+ years of running on my daily driver tires is getting expensive.

Also, does anyone see a problem with putting a 225 45 tire on a 7" wide wheel?

A friend I race with is using the RE-01R's on his new Civic SI, and he seems very pleased with them. The SCCA forums seems to still consider them nearly a wash, they react a little differently to temps (I dont think the grip falls off as much when they get cooked) and they seem to last a little longer, and in trade, they cost a little more.

Is Bridgestone still running the $100 rebate for SCCA members? If they are, you might be able to snag a set so cheap it just makes good sense.

225/45R17 hasnt been a problem that I've heard, on stock or SVT suspension at least. The RT-615 has a wide contact patch for the sizing, something like 8.2" in that size, it should be close to the strut body at OEM offset - what's the offset on the rims you're using?

I can't remember the offset of the wheel, but they're 17" euros. So it's a stock wheel offset. I think it's like +49

SVT Robzor 07-18-2007 03:12 PM

The stock EAP wheel is indeed 49mm.

I know somebody on here is running 225/45R17 RT-615's on stock wheels... I want to say it was WD40. I'll see if I can dig up the post.

If the 615's clear, then all you need to do is compare the manufacturer specs for section width and tread width to comfort yourself that there will be no problem.

I probibly should have mentioned that I'm lowered about 2 inches. That may end up causing me a problem.

Can you use a true competition tire? If so, i can seriously hook you up on some.

I know WD40 is running the 615's at 225/45/17 he highly reccomends them.....to link a little - this may be helpful:

as in non DOT tires? Down side is they will still be my daily driver tires, so they need to have some tread and ability to go through rain. Basically I'm looking for a summer tire that's got great grip. SOmething that I can drive on every day.

Once I save up enough funds I'm gonna get a set of r-comps and dedicated wheels for autocrossing. I usually go to anywhere between 15-20 autocrosses a year averaging 6 runs each event @35-50 seconds long. I eat tires up. lol

Plus I'm not 100% sure, but I think you still have to dun a DOT r-comp in street mod.

But I'm open to ideas [thumb]

that link has some great DOT r-comps on it, and the advice given to me before was that the 615's were something you could not go wrong with....next season they will be my dedicated AX tire, and probably on my dd wheels as well

Ok, well if you get some dedicated rims, let me know. I can get a killer deal on some of these:

Go to the motorsports section and check out the 595RS race tires. I can get those for about $90 each.
