remove front strut

need some help my buddy has a 2004 gti and we are putting new springs on the back went on really easy and we have the front up and ready but the struts dont want to come out of the knuckle at all we have used a rubber hammer we have kicked it and nothing seems 2 work we have been using lub to see if that helps but it just doesnt want to come off or back up. If anyone knows anything that would help that would be amazing thanks!

Try using a secondary jack to slightly lift up the knuckle or control arm. This should take tension off of the bolt and it's mounting location. Then go ahead and tap the bolt out gently so you don't damage the threads. Proceed to drop the secondary jack to get the strut to drop out.

Always use jackstands!!!!!

well see thats the problem.. we have all the bolts out and everything is being supported by jack stands. The problem we are having is getting the sturt out of the knuckle nothing is holding it in but i guess its so tight it doesnt want to come all the way off. we have got it about 3/4 the way off but it wont move no more and we dont know what else 2 do to get it the rest of the way off the knuckle.

Once you have everything unbolted from the strut, the strut mount loosened and the sinch cup bolt removed just give the knuckle a good old wack and it should drop down.

also be sure to remove the bolt from the stem of the strut in the engine bay.

we have gave it a good old wack lol. thats where we are stuck we have wacked it everyway we can think of and it moved but wont come all the way off.

the knuckle should be able to drop a tad lower then it needs to, to get it out. I would make sure everything is unbolted and that your endlink is not still sitting there and just wack it.

the only bolt on a 2004 gti is the one that hold the strut to the knuckle and thats it we have removed it and just wacked it down and its gone down but now its like stuck with about half an inch to go and wont move no matter what we do to it we have kicked it like alot of ppl have told us even auto parts stores double and triple checked all bolts were out use lub to see if that helped used a rubber hammer and it just doesnt want to budge anymore

post up a pic with the problem spot circled if you can.

Did you guys drop the front sway bar down??

I had the same problem at first. I sprayed WD40 at the base of the strut where it goes into the steering knuckle. Be sure and loosen up the 3, 13mm nuts at the stop of the strut tower under the hood. Half way is good. Then once the WD40 sets in it will slide much easier. If you can get the control arm and knuckle to push all the way down the strut will want to come out towards you away from the knuckle. Once you have the angle right it should pop out.

If you are still not getting enough clearance, loosening the tie rod from the knuckle might be required. More WD40 is always ok and letting it sit will help too.

Good luck![thumb]
