pics from airport today

Our little airport in greenwood had an open house today. So went and hung out there for a while. There were a bucn of airplanes, one gyrocopter and some helicopters. At about 10 this morning a helictopter was landing and for some reason tilted to the side and pretty much twisted itself to pieces. Everyone was okay, but it was scary.

is this james bond?

now for the bad

Cool pictures Though in the first "bad" picture the grass seems to be in pretty good shape for having a helicopter crash into it. I take it that the helicopter didn't take a hard fall? I'm glad no one was hurt.

Cheers!

I really like teh first pic, it looks cool. As for gyrocopters, they look scary to fly.

Yikes! I know any helicopter pilot will tell you they're a perfectly safe craft, but they scare the crap out of me. If you're in a plane and something happens, you can still at least have a chance of gliding to a landing. If you're in a helicopter and something goes wrong, your chances of being up you-know-what creek without a paddle are significantly higher. Glad no one was injured.

I live near a smaller "local" airport (Buchanan Field in Concord, CA) and there's a helicopter school situated there that teaches on those tiny little "bubble" choppers. One of them crashed in the park down the street from my house and within a stone's throw of an elementary school.

As for the gyro-copter... you couldn't pay me to get on one of those things!

BTW my grandfather used to be a private pilot, I had some fun/scary times in the air with him. He flew all kinds of planes from the "average" Cessna planes to a Stearman biplane to a Luscombe with no doors on it, and his last plane before retiring the license was his real "pride and joy" a vintage Globe Swift which was a beautiful plane. But a PITA to polish (it was unpainted aluminum and I had to help with that task)!!

Is the gyrocopter that scary-looking thing without a shell? Yikes

Glad no one was hurt in the weird sideways crash, that woulda been awful if it went worse at the open house...
