Looking to switch platforms

Hey guys, long time no see. I've loved shooting with my Olympus for the last year or so, but I think it's time for me to switch to something a little more popularly supported. Right now I'm thinking I'll probably go Nikon, and I've seen refurbished D5000's for fairly cheap (~$350 body only). Any thoughts?

What this also means is that I'm selling my E-420 with 3 lenses. If you're interested, check out my b/s/t thread here (http://www.focusfanatics.com/forum/s...35#post3929635)

Well, there is more support on Nikon and Canon cameras.

And you will find more accessories for them as well.

But don't knock out the Sony's and Pentaxes either. Other 2 very popular DSLRs right now.

Support is definitely something influencing my decision. I'm also really familiar with Nikons already, since I use them at work.

Well then there you go.

Why not look at the Nikon D90? Those have dropped in price quite a bit as well. And are great cameras.

The D5000 does have a nice chip, but the D90 has better hand functionality and you will be preparing yourself to get use to having all of the controls are your finger tips instead of using the menu over and over again.

The D90 is a great camera; I use one everyday at work and I love it. As for hand functionality vs menus, I currently do everything through the menus because that's how my Olympus is set up, so I'm already used to it.

If I can find a D90 for the right price I'll jump at it (used body-only is still about $600), but right now I was looking into the mid-level price range and comparing the D5000 to the Sony A500.

If I had the choice again I'd have gone with Pentax. The variety of old lenses with great optical quality is outstanding for Pentax. They've been using the same mount for many year unlike Canon and Nikon who have changed several time, so old Pentax (and third party lenses) will still fit. Can you say $100 lenses??

^^ Correction ... Nikon has never changed their mount either.

I can still use plenty of the old film lenses on my Current Nikon D300s. And vice versa, some of the newer Pro Lenses (with Aperture rings) can work on the older Film Lenses from back of the day ... going back to the 1950s.

I enjoy the Nikons because they don't push around with who has the most pixels, but yet work on enhancing the dynamic range and quality that the pixels it currently uses on their current line up. I also like their customer service over Canon.

@ YellowJellyBean - In the field, I find myself changing the settings often, especially jumping from the outside and in and running in between different locations. So skipping the menu is much better for me with everything at my fingertips.

But I can see where a person who doesn't do alot of run and gun photoshooting wouldn't mind jumping into the menu.

Also FYI, did you know that Nikon and Sony are teaming up on the sensors now. So, the new Nikon D7000 at the moment is one of the first few that have been fitted with a sensor that is also worked on my Sony.

I wouldn't mind jumping into a Sony and having one of those. Pretty cheap for what you get. I know a couple of photogs here in Houston who use them professionally and make some great photos in RAW mode. Sony is playing the underdog here and doing a great job at it while Canon and Nikon keep up their never-ending battle.

Definitely keeping my eyes peeled for good deals on a D90 body. In the meantime I have to sell my Olympus gear lol.
