Tripods and Heads

I bought the camera (Nikon 5100) and have enrolled in the community college for photography classes but now I'm needing a tripod and a head. Pretty much locked in on a Manfrotto 055PROB tripod but what about the head? The instructor recommends a three axis head over a ball head, so I've looked at both the Manfrotto 808RC4 3 way and the 498RC4 ball head with panning feature. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Well, look at you Ben ... really jumping in there. Nice.

Looking that choices you have narrowed it down too ...

The 808RC4, has easier controls and a better balance system with multiple levelers.
But on the other hand the 494RC4 would be much easier to tot around being that it is a smaller head and less things sticking out.

Both have the release plate, which is what I was looking at first, so that's a good thing.

Honestly, I think both are great. I have used Manfrotto heads before, but since I am more in the world of video, I am more familiar with Fluid Heads than 3 way heads.

If you are thinking about doing more static shots, like landscapes or objects or still portraits ... things that you can really take your time shooting I would say do the 808.

If you thinking about a traveling tripod and will be moving from location to location in one shoot ... I would recommend the 494.

And think so more ... if you are thinking about getting a super telephoto lens like a 300mm - 400mm lens that has it's own tripod foot, I would recommend the 808, since it seems more sturdy to handle the extra weight.

So, there you go Ben ... things to think about to help you decide. Good luck deciding.

And good luck with the photo classes.

Manfrotto 322RC2 Joystick

1 Manfrotto 190CXPRO4 4-Sect

I just ordered up these two from Amazon based on a recommendation of a friend who is a photographer and the fact that bot got pretty outstanding reviews. they will hold any camera gear I am going to get for a few years yet. I kinda liked the idea of a pistol grip. I may yet wind up buying a 2nd head that is not a ball kind but will wait till I get in the states to decide that.

I plan on getting a lot of use out of the ones I bought on my trip from D.C. to Texas via WV, MO, IA, and possibly a few points inbetween
