Thoughts, Tips and/or Ideas?

So I just tried one of those see-through hood shots..

see-through by Ryan Hainstock, on Flickr

But there's something about it that I don't like.. I can't quite put my finger on it. I think it's the fact that the engine bay is TOO visible. Most of these that I see, it's still a bit faded due to the hood opacity still being there.

Any ideas on how to make this better? I want to re-do it. This one is sort of bothering me.

Too sharp of a cut off between hood and no hood. Just looks like you cut a hole in the hood. Also needs to be less invisible and more opaque...

Exactly what I was thinking.. but I couldn't figure out how to soften the edges so it didn't look so sharp. Also wasn't sure how to make it more opaque looking..

I'm away from my comp now but when I get back on tomorrow I'll fiddle around and see if I can remember how I did it the couple times I've tried it. IIRC there was maybe one good tutorial online somewhere.

That would be a great help. I wish I knew PS better. As much as I fiddle with it.. it's a lot to remember.

Ah f I can't find any of my old see thru hood shots. I just went through and deleted a bunch of pics that's never see the light of day...

Anyway, it has to do with your feathering of the selection edge. You have to adjust how many pixels to feather so it looks rounded instead of a straight cutout.

EDIT: I found a couple to use.

So, in photoshop open your two pictures (one with hood up and one with hood down)
Drag the picture with hood down on top of the hood up layer. It will be put into a new layer automatically when you drag using the arrow tool. Align the two pictures. Your picture will now have two layers closed hood on top, and open hood on the bottom.

Click on the layer 1 in the task pane and draw a selection around the engine bay, but sure to adjust your feathering (circled in red) so your lines are curved, not jaggedy.

Create a new mask on layer 1 with the tool in the lower left circled in red.
Make sure your paintbrush is set to black foreground, white background. Now with the mask selected in the task pane, use the paintbrush to paint over the area you have selected. You can adjust the opacity of the brush to make it more or less see thru.

When you are satisfied, flatten the image, save and DONE!

I'll make a separate how-to see thru hood thread. Ray can decide if he wants to sticky it.
