Thinking of Selling My Nikon P100..

And picking up a good DSLR. So give me recommendations. I'm not looking to spend a ton. Maybe $500 total on camera and 50mm lense (if that's even possible?) I'm not really partial to any brand but I would definitely prefer either a Canon or a Nikon.. I just want something that shoots crisp, clear pictures and can pretty much do whatever I want it to do, when I want it to, under any lighting / weather condition.

Has to be over 10 megapixels. And I'd really prefer it shoots HD video also. Not sure if DSLR's do that also or not.

I was in the same position as you last year. I asked my fiance's brother, who just happens to be a professional photographer, what he thought the best ~$500 deal was. He pointed me towards the Canon Rebel XS. I ended up going with that paired w/ a 75-300mm lens, and have been truly happy with it.

Canon also has a newer line Rebel out, the T3, that looks very promising, and is only slightly north of the $500 range. Though I don't have any experience with it.

That's a good one. And since I am a nikon Shooter ... there is the Nikon D3100 (14mp), around 500 bucks for a body and shoots 1080p HD Video.

For me, I don't believe video from any of the DSLRs are really the deciding factor here ... these are still cameras and you should value them on photo quality as oppose to video quality ... IMHO.

Check out the used sections of photosites ... or look at the BHPhotoVideo.com's Used Section or Adorama.com's used section or KEH.com (Used camera online outlet)

To stay in the 500 range is going to be tough if you don't look at used equipment.

Going all new ... look into spending upwards starting at 700.

Well there you go ... So check out the used sections of the BHPhotoVideo Site and KEH

Prices vary on quality and usage of the camera. ... FYI ... if you are going used ... don't buy a DSLR with more than 100K shutter clicks. I say look for someone who has less than 50K. DSLRs are tested at good usage up to 150K ... but there are a few that can go higher. I have a fellow pro-photog that has a Nikon D2XS with 195K Shutter clicks ... and works fine ... but it's an freak of a camera, and a tank and gets clean once every 3 months.

I highly recommend checking out KEH, as well. I wanted to get into DSLR photography, but didn't want to get anything super fancy. I got my Olympus E-420 outfit (already not an expensive camera) for under $300.

If you're firm on not spending more than $500 for a body and a prime lens, you might want to consider a slightly older camera, like a D60.

I bought a Nikon D60 awhile ago and it came with a case, memory a few lenses etc for $618. really disappointed I had to cancel that order :|

anyway this is the site I got it from..... with a like to the T3 just for the hell of it. They're probably not the cheapest site now but they did have a nice package for the D60. too bad that's not around anymore

In the Nikon realm, the D60 or D40x are great cameras. Heck the older D80 is still good as well.
