I got my Canon Rebel XS off of Craigslist about a year ago for $340 with all original manuals, kit lens, strap, etc.

The Rebel XS is capable enough and I think that's about as cheap as you're gonna find for a decent camera. The XS is the bottom of the heap in terms of bodies, but everyone will tell you the glass is more important anyway.

Canon Rebel XS: ~$300
LowePro Passport Sling Bag: ~$50
Vivitar DF383 Flash Gun: ~$130
Circular Polarizing Filter: ~$50

That's a good starting camera outfit (what I have) for ~$500
You don't necessarily need the flash...I would actually replace the flash with a 50mm f1.8 lens. About the same price, but you'll get more use out of the lens IMO.

I agree with Lyonsroar here.

- The Rebels are a great Canon DSLR starter.
- Nikon has the Early D-Series ... like the D60, D40, D3000 or D5000.
- Sony has the A (early) Series which is another great choice. I am surprised at Sony's jump into DSLR with the giants of Nikon and Canon.
- Pentax K-x series. Not a popular brand, but an awesome camera. It also takes great photos that can rival the Full Frame Cameras.

These options would be great for under 500.

Lenses range can in a variety of prices.

I would say learn the Kit lens first when starting off then look into jumping into specialty lenses like the 50mm that Lyonsroar uses.

Thanks for the compliment.

I forgot about the Pentax KX. Don't they have the internal autofocus motor so you can use older cheaper lenses without AF? I think it does. that camera made my shortlist as well.

The price of lenses varies from the $100 50mm to the $25,000 Sigma big boy.

i have a Canon 20D is was a top notch when i got it. over $1000 but you can get them used now for under $400. at 8.2mp its still pretty good. I use it for motorsports photography its fast. so i love something with speed! thats what i like about it. i would recommend you get your something better than a Rebel if your serious about it. but it works too. just not much room to advance.

lenses you get what you pay for....
i use 75mm to 300mm which is great for long range and middle range. but 24mm-85mm is great from middle range to wide-angle. i would recommend some kind of lenses like that. something that has alot of different choices.
