Yes.

The kit lens that came with the camera.
Should be something like 18-55 MM.

Now if you want something relatively cheap that has great optics then I would go for the 50mm
http://www.google.com/products/catal...d=0CC4Q8wIwAA#

Very good for portraits. It's insanely sharp (at least my Canon version is) for the $100 price tag.

You're not going to find a lens that is good at everything. Some are good for zoom, some are good for macro, etc.

Then the kit lens suffices just fine.

If you want a zoom then you will more than likely sacrifice close up performance. That being said I've got a 75-300mm Canon zoom and it's fairly versatile. That said it's a cheap zoom and isn't as sharp as I would like and it certainly isn't fast for sports, etc.

It's a case of accomplishing many things, but mastering none.

Though you aren't pros, there are a variety of lenses out there that are available.

Understand, that some of the lenses do not Auto Focus on the D3000, so read the compatibility issues with lenses.

BH - > www.BHPhotovideo.com has lots of info on that.

On there you will find this: A Nikon 18-105 ... Great Walk around lens for the Casual Shooter like your wife will probably be.
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc..._6G_ED_VR.html

I have my old 18-55 Kit lens as well, and I just wasn't happy enough with the zoom. So, I did try this out for fun and gave it a werl with my old D60 (when I had it). For family walk arounds.

I for one, shoot with pro lenses, but that 18-105 would be a perfect range for you and your wife and it really isn't that expensive.

Good luck finding a good one. I also, recommend playing with them at like a Wolf Camera or something like that, then purchase it on BHphotovideo. BH usually has the cheapest prices for camera equipment.

Yes sir ... I have been using Nikon professionally and non professionally for about 6 years now.

I currently use a Nikon D700 and D3s at work and use to have a D40, D60, D80, D90 ... are all sold now. I am saving up for either a D7000 or a new version of the D300s ...

But lenses is where its all at ...

I have quite a few fast lenses. I am currently using my 17-55 2.8 more than the others. I want to get a better Super Tele-Zoom lens that reaches between 500-600mm for more automotive sports, I use my 300mm for those at the moment.
