Starter camera for a photography n00b?

Simply put, I'm wanting to get into photography a little more. I always enjoy taking pictures of things, but I'm pretty limited with my Kodak EasyShare point and shoot (although it really is a great camera for what it is).

So, I guess I'm looking for an SLR correct? My budget is about $200, I know that's probably pretty low, but I just don't have $600 to throw around. I'd like at least a 10mp.

So yeah, any ideas for a good camera?

The Nikon D40 is a good starter. They have been replaced by a different model now though. You can get them used on Ebay for fairly cheap now.

SLR cameras will start around 300+ for any of the used SLRs from the past 8 years with at least 10mp.

There is the Nikon D40, D100, D70 or D60. On the Canon side, there are the Rebel XSi series.

In SLR world, 8mp+ are real good. No full need to jump on 10 for SLR.

In a point and shoot 10 makes a difference.

Good luck finding the right camera for you. Take your time and do some research if you are looking for a good SLR.

Ask some questions here, we have several peeps that are into the SLR Photog world.

Buy a used Canon digital Rebel, there are a variety of models to choose from, some of the older ones are sure to fall into that budget. The only downside with buying an SLR is that you will most likely need to buy some lenses, too (unless you get lucky enough to find someone selling both the body and a halfway decent lens). Most people selling used sell the camera with the crappy kit lens it came with, or no lens at all.

I honestly don't think the megapixel rating is nearly as important as lens quality. You can get great shots from an "old" camera that has less than 8 megapixels if you have a good quality lens.

^^ Agree on the lenses^^

It's what makes the photos. The Camera is only important to upgrade once you have the good glass.

For example, my "backup" camera body is the original digital Rebel, coupled with some "L" lenses it still takes fine photographs.

Those same L lenses on a better body take even better photographs. I've taken the same basic picture in the same location using the same lenses on the Rebel and then on my 30D and there is a difference, but not as much as you might suspect. Then again, I guess the 30D is hardly up-to-date itself anymore.

I'd love a new EOS 7D or 60D if I didn't have to pay for it.
